broke off a bolt trying to remove front skid plate 05 2wd

I was doing the differential and broke off the front drivers side skid plate bolt. I believe there is for of them??? I changed the rear with no problem with mobil 75-90 and would like to finish off the front. Any Ideas on how I remedy this problem??

Where is it broken off at? If you can get at it, you can try slotting the end with a cutoff wheel and back it out with a screwdriver and vice grips, or try welding a nut to the end and turn it that way. If it's buried, you could look to see if maybe there's a captured nut on the back side you could grind free? Barring that, a good drill just became your best friend.

I don't know how hard the metal on the bolt is but the same thing happened on a transmission mount bolt on a Celica. I drilled a small hole in the center of the bolt and screwed in an "Easy Out". Basically it is threaded backwards and as it gets tighter and tighter it puts pressure on the bolt to come out. Apply penetrating oil in advance to make the threads break free more easily. If it does not work, drill it out and use a larger bolt, after tapping new threads.

Really soft metal on my '08 bolts. Had to drill small hole like mentioned above, then was ablke to just un-screw by hand. Replaced all 4 bolts on skid plate with stainless bolts, no tapping new threads needed. Maybe I was just lucky...

Get a carbide left hand twist drill bit and some PB blaster. Soak the stud overnight and then drill it out running your drill in reverse. Then use some loctite anti-seize on the bolts in the future.

You are not alone! My quick diff fluid change was hung up with me snapping two of those bolts! I had to drill and tap both of them. Drill straight and your can still tap the same 12mm bolt style. My arms are still sore from drilling upside down... Good luck!

That sucks! I've been putting anti-sieze stuff on the bolts every other oil change and they go in and out pretty easily.

Once you get the bolt out, clean up the threads with a wire brush, and paint them with anti-seize before putting it back together. You'll never have this problem again.
