broken 3rd brake light ?

My 3rd brake light has been burnt out for awhile. So today I decided I would go get a new bulb and replace it. At the store I got on the sylvania computer thing and found it to be a 25?? some 4# light. And I checked this online and I figured its correct. So I go to change it and the replacement looks right. But I plug it in and no result. Ugh. So I tried the other one in the pack and it dodnt work either. Does anyone knoe the right bulb and if this is more than a bulb problem

Foolproof way to get the right bulb is to bring the old one to NAPA, Autozone etc and walk up to the counter and ask them.

Computers and manuals are not as accurate as the desk guys.

Been there, done that!

^Agreed.

Normally you can tell if a bulb is burnt out.

If none of that stuff works then you might need to make sure the connections are good.
 
this is actually really funky. I had mine burnt when I bought my runner. I opened the brake light and inside was a big bulb with the same fitting as a 194.

I put a 194 and it worked, but it was horribly dim. I ended up getting pulled over for having a broken tail light. I just agreed with the officer that it was out even though it wasn't, I went to kragen, and looked at the bulbs. it turns out that the bulb since the manufacture of my 99 had become more compact. so in reality the bulb is a slightly larger looking 194... but not. I have the package at home and i'd love to tell you the code but unfortunately I am at work.

really just go and check out the bulbs. when you find the big 194 with the same size tip, congrats!

921 (18 W, 21 MSCP) is the CORRECT one to use. 168, 194, 912 are all too dim for a 3rd brake light. I think the 3rd brake light housing says 18 W on it right by the bulb opening.
 
BACK FROM THE DEAD.

THis turned out to be a busted wire in the rubber flex tube between the hatch and the body. Its still broken :) and now more wires are busted in there.
 
My center brake light bulb was burnt out when I first got the 4Runner back in Sept '13. I replaced a bunch of bulbs all over the vehicle, including that center brake light under the "spoiler".

The light is out again in only a couple months... it was replaced with an OEM 921 bulb. Has anyone else had this problem with frequent burnout? For those who have converted to LED, have you had any problems with the life of the LED bulbs?

Does anyone know the p/n to the 3rd brake light housing(?) in the pic below? It says KOITO E4-2. Thanks in advance.

You can always use a volt meter and see if there is power to the socket. Stick a brick or something on the brake pedal and check it.

The old bulb should have a number on it..

Oddly enough...the bulb I pulled out of the truck (I'm the original owner) was a 921 size bulb....but no numbers/letters on it anywhere.
 
Did you ever find a replacement for this part? I also have an issue with that part its burnt... ive been pulled over twice now but I was given a warning... please let me know.
