Any help on how I can fix this myself, hopefully easily and cheaply,
is appreciated.
My vehicle:
Toyota 1998 4Runner SR5 V6
The problem:
The defrost, furthest clockwise, position of my front dash
ventilation control does not cause the stuff inside the dash
to blow the air on the front windshiled. I can move the knob
to that position, but it requires some excess force and I can
tell by listening (and the result) that the stuff behind the dash
is not switching position. In the recent past, it would sometimes
click into position and work, but as of now, it never work. In
addition, the 2nd to last position, defrost+foot, does not quite work; it doesn't blow air on the windshield either. The rest of
the positions work.
I asked my auto shop, Supreme Foreign Auto in Santa Rosa
(great place by the way), technican/owner and he said it's
a common problem but to fix it requires taking apart the
whole dash would could cost upwards of $700. I'd like to
see if anyone knows a way to fix this for less. It's now winter
and I've already had a couple incidences where not having this
work has been a major hastle. I go snowboarding in Tahoe
a lot and would hate to get caught in a snowstorm without it.
