Broken down rope tow help

So I need to tow my 96 automatic 4wd home about two miles, can I rope tow that in neutral without messing anything up or do I need to get a flatbed? Thanks

Two miles won't hurt anything.

But before you get going, try those brakes. The mechanical braking ability on a 4Runner without vacuum assist is pretty dismal. Get ready to MASH on the pedal to stop.

i always tell the person being towed that THEY are the brakes, so when it's time to slow down, I use a hand signal and let them slow us down. It works fine to slow you down IF you let the towed vehicle start braking WAYYYY early, you really don't need a ton of pedal pressure even without power assist. Ideally you won't be going over 30 mph on a tow strap....

Yeah, I'm just warning to give it a try once or twice before you need to stop. It's a lot more effort than you'd expect.

I had a sticky one-way valve on the brake booster in mine - in really cold weather it would stick shut and I'd lose vac assist on the brakes. It's enough to catch you off guard.

Transmission in neutral, transfer case in 4HI 2HI, go slow. Long tows are a big no-no since the transfer case will be un-lubed during the drive while flat towed in neutral.

You don't want the front and rear drive linked in case you go around any corners. Transfer case in neutral still links the front and rear drive, though if you shift it after the truck is off, at least the ADD won't be engaged.

I'm confused. Wouldn't transfer case in 4hi still have the front and rear driveshafts linked together?
