Broken non-power antenna on 1984 replacement

I managed to break my non-power antenna on my 1984 4Runner. Are there any tricks to replacing the antenna or do I have to basically remove the right side of the dash. Is it possible to go through the glove compartment or something like that?

Any installation tips are appreciated.

I have an 86 so I dont know if its the same, but on mine you just remove the right front fender and its super easy. There is only like 7 or 8 bolts to take off and they are all reachable. Shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to do the whole thing, that is, if its the same as my 86.

You might also be able to reach it by taking off the wheel splash guard in the passenger side wheel well

You don't have to remove anything. If there's at least a 1/2" stub left you can use a generic replacement whip.

Unfortunately, the dang thing broke off at the top of the base when I was trying to single handedly load my kayak on it.

when i replaced the antenna on my '88 4runner i unscrewed the antenna from the base, removed the plastic cover under the passenger fender, removed how ever many screw under the fender, cut the existing antenna cable and tapped the new antenna cable to it... removed the glove box and radio and then pulled the new antenna cable through using the old one.

reconnected and reconnected everything back.

You could drill and tap a hole where the stub is, cut the head off a bolt that screws into an antenna and install it. I tried that on my Astro van for shits and giggles one Sunday evening just before heading to the drive in when there wasn't time to get and install a replacement. It was just to hopefully work enough for the drive in but it was just as good as new and lasted for years until I eventually sold it. I did this to my 4Runner when I broke the first one off and keep a spare with me as I seem to have a habit of breaking them. I picked up a few spares at the wreckers just for this.
