Broken Rear shock, and towing advice

I am planning on digging through the forum for the next couple of hours but I though I would get this thread started sooner rather than later.

My 98 just broke a rear shock so I need to get at least a new set of rear shocks on the way sooner rather than later. The 4runner (200k, 4x4, 3.4) Will most likely see some pretty heavy towing duty in the next year or so. Probably a solid 400 pounds on the hitch (load distributing) and maybe around 4-5k pounds total. So I want to pick some shocks and maybe springs that will help improve things in the towing department. I am not looking for a lift, but I am not apposed to a bit of extra height either. Currently about the only offroad this truck sees is fire roads getting us to trailheads.

So far a keep running across people praising the 906 and that is definitely higher than I planned on going but if it is the best for towing I think I am ok with that, I just don't want to get into other issues or excessive wear and tear on the everything is. This is an old dude after all.

Airbags (not t-eed) is also on my radar.

So Question #1 what shocks should I be looking at?

906's for springs....

I love mine and they handle towing very well. I have KYB gas adjust shocks and they seem to be pretty good.

I would do the Tundra Brake Upgrade also if you're going to be towing a lot of weight often even with trailer brakes.

The tundra brakes are on my radar but that will be down the road a bit.

I certainly wouldn't be towing that much weight with the stock brake setup.

Here is the part number for the KYB gas a-just (KG54317)

I'm sure the Bilstein 5100's would be great too, they are quite a bit more expensive though (24249966).

The springs is what really does most of the "work" for heavy loads. The 906's from OME are very good in this regard. You'll get a small lift (2" ish) but will keep you at least level with 400lb tongue weight trailer.

PS. I am running 906's in the rear with stock suspension up front. Yes there is a small rake but not bad at all, in fact, I totally dig it.
