Broken Rear Shocks - What should I get?

I now have a broken rear passenger side shock - I'm going to replace both in the rear... What should I get?

I do NOT have a lift, nor do I want a lift (right now...maybe in the future), but I do off road once in a while and I'd like some good handling...

I've been told that the OEM Tokico's are good, and other's say they are pretty junky...

I might go with the OEMs, what are the part numbers for the Tokico's? I've looked all over and I can't find the right ones for my '98 SR5...

Looking on RockAuto, I have NO idea what I'm doing... Do I need a control arm? Shock absorber? A kit? what's going on here? I'm totally lost...

OEM's. Any online dealer should allow you to surf to the part pretty easily. Try Toyota of Dallas, or Toyota of Newnan GA. They are the lowest prices I have found for dealers.

For Toyota of Dallas at least, you can enter your VIN into your order form and they will double check that you have the right part numbers.
 
Im really happy with my bilsteins, just saying... I know your not lifted but I also know bilstein makes shocks for our runners, and they are damn good shocks
 
It depends on what you want out of your shock. If you want a softer valved shock, go OEM, if you want something a bit stiffer that might give you a bit of a more positive feel when driving, go Bilstein.

I can't find any for stock 'Runners... or I'm just not looking hard enough. At this point, I can spend around $75 for OEM Tokico's shipped, + labor...
 
your just not looking hard enough, they make them cause i talked with bilstein about what i wanted and needed... i ended up getting some custom valved shocks for my 4runner from them(not for a 4runner though). but they have several 4runner shocks

The OEM's will pretty much be the cheapest you can get and are a really nice ride for stock springs. You should try doing it yourself. It is pretty easy. The worst you will have to do is cut off the remaining shock if you can't get the top nut off, which is pretty common.

Bilstein HD's are about the same price. Slightly more.

Billy's customer service is top notch. I called for parts and they sold them to me no issues and worked things over the phone in a few minutes. I run the 5100's with a TRD lift.

Install can be done yourself IF you don't mind a little work. Pry the bottoms off with a crowbar, snap the damper shaft (easier then it sounds), then install. The top bolt is a pain in the arse but do-able. Just take your time. All said and done taking your time you could do it in a couple hours with a buddy.

Take your spare tire off to provide more room to work.

Also, if you have an impact it makes rusty bolts MUCH easier. The lowers might be pretty bad. Don't strip them.

My big question - actually two - are:

  • They seem to be a stiffer ride than the OEM Tokico's - I'm not sure I want stiffer, if anything...
  • Do they make Bilsteins for STOCK lifts? If so, can someone point them out to me, or should I contact Bilstein directly and see what they have?
