I've seen the engines in 3rd gens on youtube.com but that is nothing but bragging. There are no build threads that I can find. It's hard to believe that no one out there has some insight into this swap. The reason I was looking into the 4.0 instead of the 4.7 is obviously price and availibilty. Hoe much HP does the supercharger add to the 3.4 ? I might just have to go that route.

these things aren't that slow, i see no reason why you "have" to go any route, maybe byu yourself another cheap pick up to tow with or get a little sports car for cheap rather then dive into engine swaps that you don't know are going to work,cost alot of cash, and add no value to your ride in terms of resale.
but then again i drive a 34hp 3,000lb bread box around during the summer for fun, what do i know, lol

LOL !!! I am planning ahead for the future. When my engine goes, if it goes I don't want to replace with the same 3.4 if I can drop in something better with more power. I don't have the need for speed however an extra 60-100 horses just sounds like fun.

thats also been in the back of my mind. when my engine goes, what do i want to swap in and what choices i have....More power is always nice too.
Anyone know what other engines you can drop in, if any?

Ok ok you got me on that one lol i'm on the fence about this as well. Meaning do i drop a larger engine in there or go stock and get another 300k+ miles from another 3.4l , it's a tough choice i've been thinking the same thing man only problem is if you take care of the engine you got it may be a long while before you get to do the swap.
What sort of miles are people getting from the larger engines, if they are getting 300k+ i think it's an easy choice at that point unless you cannot be bothered by swapping ecu's and other things.

A friend of mine bought a 93 Lexus 400 for $300 from a guy who wrecked it. It had the 4.0 v8 in it. The engine had 315k on it. My friend said once he removed the front end he drove it around for a little bit. He said there were no leaks, knocking, pinging. or smoking. The tranny shifted smooth and he had no problems with it. He ended up selling it to guy for $1000. I was pretty pissed he didn't tell me about it until it was sold.

The V8 swap into a 3rd gen will be amajor undertaking and probably double the cost of dropping a fresh 3.4 w/SC. You're talking rewiring the proper ECU,relocating motor mounts and that's not considering the available space. IMO unless you got a lot of time and money it's too much of an undertaking for your average 4Runner owner. It's better to go with what is proven to work unless you want to be a guinea pig.
