Broken Transponder Key...

I'm not sure how the metal got this weak, but yesterday I went to open my driver side door, turned the key in the lock, and my ridiculously expensive transponder key snapped off in the lock. awesome.

I threw a fairly large middle finger towards the automotive anti-theft industry, and decided to redneck a solution, because after my holiday shopping, I am not in the mood to shell out another hundred bucks for a stupid key with a microchip in it. Understanding that the chip in the head of the key communicates in close proximity with the chip in the ignition, I cut off the remaining tip of the key, and taped it to the spare that I carry in my wallet.

and... TAH DAH! it works. Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone was going to toss a broken transponder key.

Sucks man, but it's really not that big of a deal. You can get those keys cheap online and program them yourself in about 5 minutes

eh true, but this is a pretty immediate solution if someone is in a bit of a bind

I realize this goes against the idea of security altogether, but could you ziptie the microchip part under the dash near the ignition, and then just use a regular key? I've been considering the same thing, but I just ordered some blanks from Amazon....

Yes, as long as it's close enough. That's how auto-starts were getting around the transponder issue initially. Not sure what they've progressed to but it does work.
