Brush guard for my 2017 SR5

Hello all!

I just purchased a 2017 4Runner SR5 and am considering a very sturdy brush guard. We live on top of a mountain a mile from the road. My drive is one mile of gravel straight up. Since I’m off road a lot I need something REALLY strong! Do any of you have any recommendations?

The ugly brush/bull bars look tough but don't give any pinstriping protection down the sides.

I was thinking of frontend protection from tree branches and brush. I drove an FJ Cruiser for 14 years and it recently passed away. It would drive through anything!

Brush guards seem to be a mostly cosmetic item (that doesn't really look that good in most cases, IMO).

I would strongly consider buying a replacement front bumper if you're worried about protection, especially from wildlife. They're not cheap, but for maximum functionality they're the way to go.

ARB, CBI, RCI, Schrockworks, C4 Fab, SSO,(plus more I'm surely missing) make 4Runner front bumpers.

full steel will definitely give you the best protection, but keep in mind the added weight will have hidden expenses in adjustments to you're suspension... especially if you plan on running a winch.

what are you trying to protect? head lights? paint? your radiator?

although mega weapon's bumper is bad ass, it will not protect your head lights from getting scratched up... which isn't a huge issue for Ray since most of his pics are in desert terrain. If you have a lot of over growth, your going to want hoops around your lights to prevent scratching also, if you can get a bumper that isn't a full replacement, it will be lighter and easier on your bakes.

I personally run an sso with a winch an the stage 2 protection. I don't get off road as much as I want to, but want to be prepared when I do. If you're scraping up on brush daily, you'll need something more substantial.

You definitely do not want a brush guard. If you look back on some old threads, people used to refer to them as “damage multipliers”. The effective reason is that the mounting method is weak, and under any real force the guard collapses back on the vehicle causing excess unintended damage. That’s really why your best bet is a replacement metal bumper.

id take a look at the shrockworks bumper. dont forget that you'll need to upgrade your suspension to account for the added weight of a bumper
