Budget friendly dashcam

I am looking to get a dashcam and want it to be budget friendly. I see there are some on Amazon for $69 and guys rave about and the uploaded video looks good.

Any suggestions?


Also I will be buying the dongle to get the power off the rearview mirror to make it a clean install

I have a Viofo A119 V2 (this is the V3) which is somewhat out of your budget, but I think it's a very solid dashcam. Here are the reasons I chose it over others:

1) Built in screen. A lot have wifi to connect to a smart phone. Often the associated apps suck or are glitchy. It's also really nice to just have a built in screen for positioning and editing settings instead of having to mess with connecting your phone up.
2) Low profile wedge shape. I usually put it behind my mirror.
3) Capacitor powered. I don't live in a super hot area, but I wanted to mitigate against the batteries that can overheat when exposed to too much sun. Something to consider.

#1 was a big factor as I've used the wifi/app ones in the past and it can be insanely frustrating.

Side note: I pull the SD card and use VLC to record relevant clips from the big clips for sharing.

Car Cam Central has a good YouTube channel where he reviews a ton of cameras. Worth checking out also.

Ive had a Rexing V1 for about 3 years now. Great product for the price and easy & clean install. I routed the power cable down the A pillar and to a 12v plug.

They now have a full range of them with different features at different price points that are worth looking at. These go on sale almost every amazon prime day as well :)
 
Aukey dashcam from Amazon from me. Wired it to fuse panel and tapped into a fuse that is ignition controlled. Set it and forget it. Camera mounted behind the mirror so it is not blocking any portion of my view. From outside, it blends nicely and don't even really notice it.

I always keep a spare SD card in the vehicle. And when I need to pull footage, I swap them out. Like above, use VLC for playback.

I opted for this because it has no rechargeable battery which can be a hazard due to the summer heat that I experience where I am.

I have had a Nextbase 322GW for about 1.5 years and it has worked great. I had heard that they don't last if you leave them in hot or cold vehicles but I have never wanted to hassle with taking it in or out. I figured for $160 I would see how long it would last and it is still working just fine.

Same here. I have a Rexing V1 in three vehicles and they've worked just fine.
 
I have the Rexing v1. Its fine. Has a screen and wifi 4k video. The vofio 119 is a little smaller. Fits better behind the mirror. I sorta wish I had the Vofio but the Rexing is fine. App and wifi work fine. I have a little trouble going back to recording after I connect with wifi. Its user error.

The main call out is how to power the dashcam. I found the donger usb adapter to be fantastic. It eliminates a power cord by powering the dash cam from the mirror. They make 4runner 7pin version thats plug and play. A steal at $28!

Another vote for Viofo - I'm running the A129 in both daily drivers. I almost went for the newer Garmin units, but the reviews seemed to be mixed.

I think you'd be happier long term with something with a proper hardwire kit that you could set and forget.Having cables hanging out running to the USB/cig lighter bothered me and seemed to scream "steal me!" The capacitor power supply was a selling point for me as well.
 
I have the Viofo A119 and it seems to be doing fine. I think I installed it four or five months ago. Electronics get beat up by the sun when you have them mounted on the inside of your windshield so keep that in mind. Some will last longer than others. The beautiful thing about YouTube is you can see reviews for pretty much anything you can buy. I would ask yourself why you want a dashcam and go from there. Are you going to use the footage in videos you're producing? Go with a higher resolution camera. Do you just want it to capture video for self protection such as traffic accidents or weird shit that happens on the road? Maybe get something inexpensive. If you want to go super cheap you can check Aliexpress. It just takes weeks to get your products. I think there may be some phone apps that will let you use your smartphone as a dashcam as well. But that will fill the memory of your phone up pretty quick. Good luck!
 
This is the one that I bought for my wife (see link below, trying to figure out this forum's hyperlink thingy, and I may be having a dumb). Only problem I had with it is that it would stop recording when the card filled up, regardless of the settings I used. I solved it by taking the card out and doing a FULL format in my laptop rather than a fast format. Works like a charm now. Dirt cheap, but no rear cam (rear cam version is a bit more).

The other problem is the Chinglish instructions are almost worthless. It's a pretty simple device though, so just scroll thru the screens and you can figure it out pretty easily.
