Bug Shield owners check in

Hey All Quick question.....

For those of you who own the Bug Shield (whatever brand) chime in to let me know what kind you got and if you have a problem with wind noise @ high speeds.

I searched and found that some people were getting a noise over 50 mph. Also, did you install it yourself or have the stealership do it for you? Thanks

I've got one already installed on my 4runner when I bought it. But just curious, what does it do, I'll go out and try to see what brand I have.
 
I have the Canadian version of the bug shield and I don't notice any problems with it. I had the American version a while back and I noticed that the rubber gromets wore away under the hood. That's essentially why I replaced it with the Canadian version. I think it looks much better on the hood and provides the "protection" its supposed to.
 
I have the US version and there's no wind noise that I can hear. It's off right now because of the rubber grommets Noloc was talking about.
 
I have the US Toyota bug shield on my 2005. It was installed on the truck when I got it. As the other members have said, the bugshields are not made well. The rubber stoppers on mine wore out after a few months. Whenever I would open the hood, the shield would drop down on my head. The dealer replaced it under warranty for me. The next time it breaks, I will just take it off completely.

Scrappy125, I see you have a 2006 4Runner. The Toyota bugshield will not fit the 2006 4Runner. If you look on the grill, there is no place to stick it. You may have a hard time find one for your 4Runner.

Thanks Mark, I'll have to keep an eye out for that. The ones on Ebay that say 2002-2006 I'll have to double check if they are really going to fit. I'm sure its only a matter of time before somebody comes out with one though.

So all are good with the wind noise?
 
I have the Canadian version made by Benevento. I believe there are a couple companies that make the Canadian style deflector, or one company makes it and they just slap different stickers on it and package them in different boxes.

I have heard no wind noise at any speed with the deflector on. I haven't had any issues except that 2 of the screws are rusting, but all the others are fine. I will probably just replace them all with stainless and forget about it. Also, with this type of deflector (not sure of the others), make sure you tighted up the screws every once in a while. They will eventually work themselves loose!

Rubber stoppers? Hmmmm...........I have the 3M brand that a friend of mine got for cost through the transportation distribution loop. It mounts with the same screws used to hold the front grille (4 of them I believe). There is some slight vibration at high speeds but no significant wind noise that I've noticed. It appears that 3,4, or 5 different styles of bug shields may be on the market for the 4Runner. I like the one I have the best....you have to check the tightness of the screws every six months to make sure the wind vibration hasn't loosen them. Good luck in your buggie shield search!
 
I have the Canadian version, not sure who makes it, got it from Carson Toyota. Love it.
No noise or vibration at all that I've noticed.
Kind of a PITA to install as it fits very flush on the hood, maybe a half inch off the hood, so you want to make sure everything is lined up perfectly.
Don't know if this model will fit the '06, but I'm sure they will come out with one that will.
Looks very cool in my opinion.
 
does anyone have a sport edition w/ a bug deflector ?

im curious if the nonfunctional scoop gets in teh way.
 
Short answer......NO.
The deflectors, US or Can. sit far forward of the scoop.
No interference at all.
 
Mine does not make any noise at all. I have the US version. The rubber grommet mounts on the outside edges have come loose but when the hood is closed it does not move at all, which is why i havent replaced them.
 
I have one made by AVS. I think it is not as low profile as some of the others but not that noticeable. It is held on by the two screws with the expandable rubber things and it also fits between the hood and center grill insert to help support it. I installed it myself and it has been on for 2 years, no problems. I put it on because of the paint chips I was getting on top of my hood, it has helped with that but does not do much for the bugs. I have not noticed any additional wind noise.
 
I have the AVS shield. It's quiet but the turbulence it generates causes my side mirrors to vibrate at interstate speeds. Other than that and the fact that the expanding rubber mounts are a bit cheesy, I like it.
