"Build" thread issues

I understand people want to show off their trucks on this forum, but there are so "build" threads that don't have any building whatsoever.

Many of the threads consist of pictures of their trucks in the driveway, at the store, or on a dirt road. The "build" is either pictures of things that were purchased but not installed, or general maintenance like replacing shocks or ball joints. Maintenance is not a "build" by any stretch of the imagination.
There are other forums where a build thread is modifying a truck and a full walk through of the process. It seems half the threads on this forum are nothing like that.

It would make more sense to just have "My truck" thread or "Maintenance on my truck". I go to these expecting to see modifications and a build. Sadly, many are just "Here is my truck in the driveway and I bought some rims and lights".

This is not regarding all build threads. Some are great and very detailed.

Im sure anyone who has a thread described above will disagree with me and retort with "where is your build thread!". I dont have one because I have a mostly stock truck that mainly see's maintenance which has been posted a 1000 times on this and every other forum.

^^^ I agree with Bart. Some don't have all the money to 'build' a full blown off road vehicle so some new wheels, new lights etc may be a start to their thread. Even with these simple builds, it can still give others ideas.
 
I understand where you're coming from. You're new to the forum and really liking it but have started to see some things that you don't quite like or would like to see done differently. That's cool, it happens to most people. But there's absolutely no point in complaining about it because nothing is going to change.
This is a 4Runner site. 4Runners are not performance vehicles so you're not going to see crazy performance mods and 550hp donks and track times. 4Runners can hold their own offroad with a decent driver behind the wheel but they're not on the same level as Jeep Wranglers as far as offroad performance, aftermarket support and fan base, so you are rarely going to see massively lifted 4Runners with insane wheel articulation etc etc.
It is what it is. 95% of the build threads are just' here's my new grill, here's my new roof rack, here's my 2 inch lift, and what you think of the color of my rims?' But hey, that's what a LOT of people here like.
 
My favorite of all is "build thread for my wife's 4runner". 3" lift with 33s but need some running boards to make it easier for her to get in.
 
As a new member I kind of like the variety in "build" threads. Sort of neat to see what you can do in terms of modifications and also what people are doing to keep their 4Runner on the road.

Thank you Techno, I appreciate your reply and think you hit the nail on the head. Things are just the way they are around here and that’s what the general mass likes.

To expand my point, I think I am used to other Toyota forums where “build” threads are actual builds and modifications. Pirate 4x4 and Yotatech are more in tune with what Im thinking of.
Don’t get me wrong, there are many members with great build threads on here. I suppose my own opinion differs from the masses when I think “getting tires and cleaning the seats on your new to you 20yr old truck” is a build. That’s why I was suggesting maybe call it “A truck introduction thread” or “Maintenance of my truck” thread.

I will give an example of things I’ve done to my stock truck:
Replace upper/lower ball joints
HID retrofit
Install clutch kit
Tires
Fixing electrical gremlins and broken sensors
And many other small things.

None of the above would warrant a thread in itself as these things have been documented thousands of times now. I had many problems with certain things along the way but I chose to use forums, Google, and the FSM to troubleshoot and resolve on my own. Making a thread would just be more spam on this forum. I am not special or looking for praise because I own a 20 yr old truck. The hand outs and “troubleshoot for me” threads are annoying as hell. Especially when it’s the same question asked on a weekly/monthly basis.
There are too many threads of “My XXXXX is broken/not working right, Ive tried nothing. Guys, what do you think the problem is”.
I understands my opinions reach much further than the T4R forum itself, however they are just that. My opinions.

I will continue to be a part of the community and respect many members opinions and knowledge here. I try to contribute and assist other members when stuck on troubleshooting their own issues.

I was just getting something off my chest and seeing if anyone else shared my thoughts.

It's just an ego stroke-fest perpetuated by the anti-TRD Pro crowd. If you like build threads, go to the Jeep forums.
 
Love the build threads where members that post DIYs, process and troubleshoots. Unfortunately, especially in the 5th gen forum the build threads are saturated with "bought these xxx items and paid for labor, this is how it sits on my driveway".

Oh and the plastidip build threads...
 
As I was reading this I saw my dog in the corner of my eye catch a fly. Not sure what was more interesting but this is a simple situation of "different strokes for different folks". Build to one is not build to another. To some people showing your shrock bumper install isn't a build because you literally just bought a bolt on part. Unless you fabricated it yourself then it's just sticking bolt on parts to your vehicle.
That suspension you bought isn't a build because you just bolted it.
Then you have those that think pinstripes are worthy of a build thread. Don't take this in a rude way but your opinion doesn't matter and neither does mine. We are all here for similar reasons :)

And when some have done additional builds to there rides, there will come, having to do there maintenance/replacing other parts due to the building they are doing. Other parts breaking sooner than needed you might say.

Some of the normal maintenance that others put in there threads are being used for time frame/mileages for references for them also.

Kinda like mine in a way.

I get your point, but don't understand why you would even post this. If you don't like people's "build threads" that's completely fine. You are welcome to your opinions, but posting this is not going to cure the issue you have with people posting things that get them excited. It's a community where people enjoy their vehicles and want to share what they have done. I personally enjoy seeing what people do to their cars regardless of if it qualifies as a full blown "build." People put "work" into their cars to personalize them and want to share for various reasons. If it doesn't fit into a certain category that has your requirements who the hell cares. Just don't click through them. Problem solved.

Build..."construct (something, typically something large) by putting parts or material together over a period of time."

We like to offer solutions to problems. His problem is threads he doesn't like. Solution. Don't read them/

For anyone who said they still enjoy peoples threads and like them, no problem at all. That feedback is welcomed and I never said I didn't enjoy peoples threads but calling some of them "builds" is silly.
Lets be honest, you want to show off your truck for everyone to see. Once again, not a problem. It seems many people have a vague idea of a build though and include maintenance and tires.

Computer build thread: "I bought a computer in put in new ram and a hard drive. I totally build this computer!

Anyways I will leave this alone. It seems that I go against popular opinion on the forum and some people seem offended.

Hahah, I feel you. I *might* have one of those build threads, partly because I forgot to go back and update it. Maybe I'll go back and update it once I install my new bumper :party:

t4r.org obviously needs an achievement system where you unlock rewards based on how far you've built yours. Bronze -> Grandmaster (Overwatch anybody :lol:), an appropriately colored star will appear on your build tread title based on your achievement status

I think it's nice to see everyone's "build threads". You get to see some actual builds but then people tackling normal everyday things. You never know if you posting your electrical gremlin fixes help someone else fix theirs. I just like seeing people wrench on their stuff.
