Awesome trip!

The hardest part for me is
my limited experience,
going out there solo and finding myself in a bind
having kids with me if something happens
finding the right trails.

I want to do a camping trip with the kids mid august.
Any recommendations? (i know there's alot) Within 2-3hrs with and a very nice lake for them to play in.

Just plan a trip, and find a date. Then GO! That's all there is to it. I am fortunate enough not to have many at home commitments, but I squeeze in trips whenever I can. Just pull a planned trip out of the hat when you see an open weekend and "book it".

All last year, I thought about doing things and going places, and by the time winter came, I realize all I did was look at pictures and push things off. To hell with that. This year, I have been focusing on making the best use of my time, enjoying things that I love and going places I have always planned on going. Never too late to start, but the hardest part is starting :thumb3:

I did the same thing years ago. I got pissed off wishing I was out in the woods doing something cool and fun so I started riding a bike. On my street. Because I was fat and out of shape. Because life happened. Fast forward 15 years. I logged over 200 miles in the the month of June. On my bike. On singletrack.

Good for you getting out there and doing stuff!

Hwy. 4, Lake Union or Utica Reservoir. There are both designated campgrounds as well as boondocking. Personally, the campground at Union West is great, with beautiful lake access and plenty of forest service roads. Corral Hollow is close and doable in a few hours and could be done stock, there would be some challenging spots, but doable. Also, depending on when you are there, I am about 30 min down the road from there and would be glad to take a day trip.

The quote below is an offer you should not refuse!
You just have to get out and do it. When starting out you are going to:
Pick something too hard
Pick something too easy
Pick the wrong place
Have the kids get bored
Get stuck
Get bug bit
Get minor damage to you are the truck

The point is you are going to learn by doing and rochmpr is giving you options already. You just have to do it! Nobody "just" steps in, picks the perfect spot and makes an epic weekend unless they have went through the pain of learning how "not" to make an epic weekend lol.

Yes, I will make it happen. Sometimes it's better with another person getting lost. =)
Awesome! Thanks for the input. I will definitely look into Utica rochmpr . I'm thinking August 6th or 13th. I was thinking corral hollow at first but wanted to camp next to lake for the kids.

I'll be up there that entire week as well. Camp at the lake, 20 min to Corral Trail.

PM and we can side bar this

Copy that. Good for you. Acadia National Park in October, then bigger Moab/Big Sur/Grand Canyon trip with the bikes next fall. Slowly but surely coming together. I plan on the frequency increasing as the kids get a bit older, but I'm getting there.

Awesome! I have lost a lot of weight over the last few years riding, myself. Is that bike a 27+? I'm riding road/CX, but looking at MTBs now. The 3" tire segment looks like a lot of fun. Seems you still get comfort without dropping $3k+ on a full suspension.

29+ and you will drop $3K on this bike lol. Comfort is relative. What was a hard line with regular 29's is not so hard with this bike. So what happens? You take the harder lines!

You will need to experiment a bit to figure out what works and what doesn't, and at the end of the day, you will have something not go to plan. If you look at some of my explorations, most of them include a plan, and then an obstacle of some sort that would ruin the plan, so then I would make a new plan and so on. I still don't get it right haha. Best you can do, look on a map at where you want to go, figure out how to get there, and then research the area online (Expo is your best friend here) to find if there is information on the trip you want to take, or maybe someone who is local to the area that can give you some insight. Chances are you won't be the first person to take whatever route you're looking to travel, and it's likely that you'll find some form of information on the subject. Check out Gaia GPS. It's fantastic for route planning. And look for people who are organizing group trips (Again, Expo is your friend) and jump in on them. That's what got me started. Regardless of what happens on your trip, I have never gotten to the mountains and thought, "Man I wish I would have stayed home."

I'll be trying to organize a fall weekend trip sometime, so keep an eye out for it.

I have been looking a lot into that area as of late. From the map, they look like they have the makings for a great base camp. I need to get to that area and hit and contact you for a trail day, rochmpr.

Everything 1engineer said. Nail on the head, man.

For sure. I am there most weekends. Know all the good spots for food and drinks, the local market has a great selection of adult beverages in various flavors and sizes. (10% discount when you buy 4 - 22 oz bottles).
