Just a quick photo post from the weekend exploring around the Tahoe / Truckee area with Frank (@frankrebelo on IG) and my coworker in her DCLB Tacoma. The trail was more rutted and technical than the last time I came through here 2 years ago...

So I upgraded from the stock Panasonic to a X2Power (Northstar) after having the stock battery fail last week. Check out my website for a little blurb on why I chose the brand and size I did for the Mountain 4Runner!

FWIW I’ve been running this battery for just over a year, it replaced a sears diehard platinum and has been working much better. With the fridge on constantly it seems to handle it better when I stretch out days between starting.

We were behind Tahoma, in and around the Barker Pass area.

FWIW I’ve been running this battery for just over a year, it replaced a sears diehard platinum and has been working much better. With the fridge on constantly it seems to handle it better when I stretch out days between starting.

It's been great so far, quick starts and no hesitation with the fridge on for 24 hours without a start. It definitely gives me some extra confidence camping and not having to worry about a dead battery (even though I have a Noco jumper as a backup). Hopefully I will be able to add some form of solar at some point for basic trickle charging when docked at the same site for a few days.

In your research, did you find the V8 4th gen battery tray for the 27f was a direct bolt in to the 5th gen or does it have to be modified? I can't find this info...Thanks

The 4th Gen tray will fit without modification to squeeze the 27F in there. That would be the biggest battery I would put in there if the 24F doesn't have enough juice.

Good stuff I love that network of trails, they link up to the Rubicon. Did y'all get up to Ellis Peak or Buck Lake?

We did a loop past Bear Lake but didn't have enough time to climb Ellis Peak. I will be up there a few more times this summer and I'll likely head up there soon from the Rubicon side for the great view! Bear Lake to Miller Lake was pretty beat up and rocky. It would be interesting to see if there is any formal trail maintenance in that area for trails other than the Rubicon.

Ellis peak is a great run. Nothing crazy but some good views along the way! We are heading up the weekend of 28th-29th to do two days of MTB/4x4 camping if you're interested in joining.

Yep! I went up there 2 years ago when the 4R had tires and sliders. Got stopped by snow a few times, banged up my skid plate and ended up hiking to the top due to a snow drift! But it's a great place to shake down a rig. I'll check my schedule and PM you.

Trail Standard Offroad Grille Cover

Those that have been following this thread know that I have had a "hole" in my grille ever since I replaced the upper grille with the TRD Pro version to accommodate the Baja Designs S8 that I hid back there. I have had many comments regarding when I was going to add the TRD garnish to the front of the 4R, and frankly unless I came across a steal of a deal, I hadn't planned on doing anything with it because I couldn't justify the cost of a piece of aesthetic plastic when I would rather spend the money on adventures or beer...

Well that changed when a more affordable version of the garnish came on the market from Trail Standard Offroad. SO, I finally caved and added their grille cover to the front of the 4R and it really finishes off the front end. Better yet is the top notch quality of the product as it was developed with the same techniques used to produce the Toyota version. The fit and finish is impressive, and it comes preloaded with 3M VHB double sided tape to adhere it to the front clip, same as the Toyota version. My version is a bed lined version that will likely fade into a nice matte textured black with some miles and dirt exposure.
