built a CAI for less than $10 (filter extra)

Get a 4" to 3" piece of stove pipe (aluminum) from home depot. Remove the fat hose from air filter housing (inside filter too) and put the 4" end on the housing...fights tight...tape the ends to seal it. the 3" end will fit on a KN or any brand filter with a 3" opening. Wrap the metal with insulating foam tape to keep it cooler. put a bead of 1/2" foam weatherstripping on the housing cover edge & replace it. Your done! Works as good as a $300 setup from the stores. BTW this is for a 2006 V6 I'm not sure if it will work on other year/models

On 3rd gens just cutting a hole in the airbox gives 7-8whp and it's free but a drop-in will cost you about $40.

Simple design, kind of like I did for one of my other vehicles in the past. You will have to let us know if you get any mileage gains and if the engine heat has any affect, though you should still get some fresh air where its at.

Thanks for adding the picture...as for engine heat I think at idle it might be a few degrees warmer but I also think the increase in air volume will counteract the heat...and as for on the highway enough air flows thru that heat wont be a factor. So for $7 and change I rid my truck of almost 2 1/2 feet of couragated rubber that got smaller in diameter as it hooked up to the fender air inlet...A big restriction I think!
 
I'm sorry, but that's the most terrible thing I've ever seen!! How do you expect something like that to stay together? What happens when you're driving down the road and your electrical and/or duct tape comes loose and your whole filter falls off?!?!?

You drive a nice vehicle, buy a nice (real) intake or leave it stock, that thing is an embarrassment...:bash:
 
It wont fall of...& I really don't give a crap if you like it or not. $10 beats $250 & up...I don't have that kind of money & this will work just as good!

I believe he's using standard clamps and just has heat reflective tape covering the tube. So its not just taped on.

Yes Bill...You are correct...There are clamps under the tape...I realize it isn't pretty because I put the foam tape over the metal surface...but how many people will see it under the hood...I think its foolish to spend $300 on a "pretty" CAI when my design will work exactly the same. Thanks for backing me.
 
Air induction systems are purposely tuned to optimize cylinder volumetric efficiency, especially to take advantage of variable intake valve timing. In addition the MAF must sense in a low turbulent zone. The OEMs carefully look out for these things.

Please be aware when you are modifying the air induction system.
 
More power to ya. If you want to change the way air comes in, well go for it. Honestly, you have to at least give him credit for trying to make one himself. And if you just add a few curves well there ya go, a rough version of the K&N. Besides, what will you say if it so happens the dynos show an improvement?
 
but then again, it still breathes the hotter air under the hood? intake air temperature plays a big if not bigger role aside from better air flow.

what you did is "priceless";): gotta give you that.
