Bump stops

Mike,

What were the biggest differences you noticed with the bump stops? Are they just variations of the OEM ones or air/hydro ones?

Reason I am asking is I am getting my King coil overs, TC UCA's, TC Spindle Gussets and Radflo 2" rear lift coils after the Kings get built (few weeks) and thinking of rear bump stops...just trying to figure out which ones.

The front poly-of somesort ones from Wheelers soften the impact and lessen rebound while limiting uptravel to the stock limits.

The rear Hydro/pneumatic ones soften the impact, but also slow the rebound. Where as the OEM jounces hit and kick from the rubber to axle contact. These rebound back out at some controlled rate.

The big difference overall in the ride quality is not slamming hard on an jump or dropoff/whoop situation.

From the hydro/pneumatic bumps on the market.

-The Fox ones are a little cheaper by unit but most are just air bumps. These weld to the frame usually and need a custom strike plate that is welded.

-the Jounce style ones mount inside the coil an I am only aware of 2 companies that make them Icon (over $600) and Light Racing (about the same) The LR ones are good in that they are adjustable. Both of these are Hydro and pneumatic.

If you plan on going fast and bouncing around I recommend some sort of bumps.

My only gripe about the Icon ones and it is my fault for not using thread locker. The strike plate bolts backed off and fell off in the desert. :wow2: it still has something to hit on inside the lower coil bucket, but I need to replace those plates.

I think I suggested the Wheelers bumps to you in the suspension FAQ sticky.

I think you did as well. The guy at ORW who is setting up the install mentioned that the TR4's "stock bumps are the best on the market. During fabrication, the re-use of the stock bump is what I would do if I didn’t have the cash to do hydro bumps."

Id go with the wheelers. Based on what Ive seen on Tacomaworld, the Timbren's are really stiff and arent much better than stock. The wheelers are a nice softer foam that actually compress a lot and slow down the suspension before stopping completely. I just put in an order for a set.

This helped a lot, was about to grab me a set of timbren, now I’m rethinking it because the wheelers seem to match the type of off-roading I do...

I was looking at my left rear bump stop a few days ago...in the rearview mirror as I was merging onto the Hway. Both of them rusted off now....
