OK, i had just finished under coating my 92 4runner and was taking it out for a drive in a dirt raod so the oil and stuff would stick to my frame. I didn't have a lot of gas but thought i would have enough just for the small ride i took. Now coming back from the ride, i started hearing a knocking sound comming from the 22re, i let go the gas, the engine strugled to run, as if it was running out of gas. I stalled it from the key and called m dad to come get me some gas i put the gas in fired it up, it strugles to run, and when i give it gas, like make the rpm's go up, you hear this knocking sound coming from the engine. I brought it home, checked it out, spark one had a bad wire. Spark 3 was burned out. I understand the engine strugling to run if it is running just one 2 or 3 pistons but, why the heck is it knocking?

The knock may be there from the fuel and air in the cylinders that is not combusting. I would replace all the spark plugs and wires, then see if the problem is still there. You will also want to make sure that no part of any spark plug has broken off and fallen inside the engine.

nope the sparks are ok, only one that had a deffect was on the 3rd cylinder, which was all white, as if it was running lean. All others were well intaked and in good running condition, spark wire from number 1 ripped out when i pulled on it, bit it looked as if it was hacked on with splices cut out of the line. I will replace all sparks and wires tomorrow, i really hope this is the problem, the engine ran A-1 when i left my house, and ran like crap when i returned, and i did not beat it or anything.

ok bad news, the sparks and wires didn't fix it, it still does the same thing, and i believe i may have mixed on my last post, it was spark 2 that wasn't working. Ok now the problem is it still does the same thing, i unpluged 1 and 2 and let it run with only 3 and 4 connected and it works the exact same way as if they were all connected. That means 1 and 2 aren't getting any fire aye, wrong! they are both getting good fire, i checked them both, they sparks ignite just fine. But i did find something though, when number 2 isn't pluged, the knocking isn't their it just studers, runs rough. WHat could it be? Timing off, bad distibutor cap?

i found the problem aye, pulled the engine out and found the head gasket was blown between 1 and 2. DO you think thats the only thing that would have been causing all of my problems?
