burning DVDs that will play

I used to be able to copy any DVD for my own personal use-not to sell it but just to rewatch it at my convenience.

I have no trouble copying it to my computer hard drive, but when I attempt to burn it to a blank DVD I encounter trouble.

Can anyone suggest a resource that will work? Apparently I have not kept up with technology. I'm 46-much of this stuff I have not a clue.

I don't believe I am suggesting anything illegal here.

If I am -please let me know. That is not my intent.

I am 44 and not much better at this stuff... Most computers come with Roxio or some DVD burning software. I have found that's the only way to successfully copy a DVD. There are so many types if DVD's availible now too. Make sure the one you're using is compatable with the player you're trying to use. Good Luck!

I know THIS guy, he uses a decrypter (to decypher the disc), DVD Shrink (to make it fit on a standard DVD R), and Nero (to burn to the DVD R). One thing he notices is that not all DVD Rs are created equal. Some cheap/unknown brand will not do the job, they tend to skip a lot during playback. Cosco will have a buy 1 get 1 free Sony 100 pack DVD+/-R on sale w/ coupon on Aug 4th.

I used to use Nero and DVD Shrink but they have stopped working. Perhaps I just need to update my downloads.

DVD's have copy protection. You need to remove it. It seems you use windows, and I am not familiar with good software for windows.

On my mac, reproducing a copy protected DVD takes 2 basic steps and a 3rd optional one.

1) Decrypt the DVD and copy data to your HD. A quick search turned up a piece of software called DVD Decrypter, but like I said. I avoid windows and have not used it. It may be full of spyware, I really have no idea.

2) Compress the DVD
Most modern retail DVD's are dual layer or DL DVD's. These hold somewhere in the neighborhood of 8GB of data. Standard DVD's hold 4.7GB of data. Standard DVD's used to be significantly cheaper, so it was wise to compress the ripped video files to 4.7GB. There is a lot of software that does this. Nero might even do this once the files are decrypted.

3) Burn the DVD. I assume you are familiar with this part.

Reproducing DVD's takes a lot of HD space....

DVD Shrink is at 3.2 now. You need to start with a decricptor like SlySoft.com and try ANYDVD free for 30-60 days. It works great for personal use.

If you ripped it correctly you should have VIDEO_TS and and AUDIO_TS folders. These are essential, you may have other files but they aren't necessary. Many times the AUDIO_TS folder is empty, but in my experience it works better if it is included. Just burn a DVD as data with (at the minimum) the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and it should work just fine.

Thanks all of you for your help. I am certainly not quick at this type of thing- but I am stubborn as all get out.


It has been bugging me for awhile to get this working again and I appreciate the inputs.


weird note on the DVD+R stock that I am using-the printing is on the incorrect side of the disk. Once I flipped it over all went well on the burn side.

My personal collection is muy grande.

All DVD's are NOT made equal. I find GREAT luck with Verbatim, and then Memorex and TDK.

I use A pioneer DVD burner, and CloneDVD2 coupled with AnyDVD.

Never a unreadable disc on multiple DVD players.

Do you use an HDTV? If so it would be useful if you get DL discs, as only around 70% of that quality can be original.

I miss Verbatim, not around this new city anywhere. Been having good luck with HP-16. Imation did not burn fast at all. If it is an important save, I burn around 8 or 12x.
Plextor 16x with AnyDVD, DVDShrink 3.2, and Roxio for other copies.

what i found out is...dont burn and rip at the same time. that causes issues. i use either DVDFab or DVD Decrypter for copying to ISO files, and DVD Shrink to reduce ISO size. then roxio. ive had no issues w. any DVD's not breaking the protection. anyway rip all of them first then shrink then copy one at a time. even on my comp with 4gb of memory it still wont burn right if you do it all at once.

on this note... check out joox.net the site has a lot of free movies in DIVX format for DL. some are up to date too. the site doesnt always work but....when it does its nice

thanks guys I have been having pretty good luck

but I get the impression if the master disc is scratched up- there is nothing I can do to make a good burn.

If DVD Shrink tells me the D drive disc (master) is failing the redundancy test even if I compress it with DVD Fab or some other service the burned disc will have the same problem as the original one.

I just tried No Country for Old Men and the master disc skips at Chapter 4 and goes back to the root menu.

I can bring the picture back but it skips Chapter 5 and goes to Chapter 6. Sure enough the burned disc had similar issue.

Similar trouble with "3:10 To Yuma" but immediately afterwards I had no trouble with "Alien vs Predator-Requiem"

Appreciate all the input but DVD Shrink in combo with Nero is the bomb for me.....:awais:

While it might be irrelevant, burning 2 discs from a hardware point of view shouldn't be any problem. If you are having problems, must be software related.

I used to do this a lot on a computer that would be considered old now, PowerMac G4 dual 1ghz, with no problems at all.

From my experience, the most crucial aspects of burning DVD's are DVD media and burn speed.
