Burning smell coming from underneath

I searched for a topic discussing this but didn't really find what I was looking for. I have owned several 3RD Gen 4Runners and never had this problem. I have a 2001 4WD with 120K on it. It is in good condition the timing belt, etc were replaced at 115K. It doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil between changes. The radiator is full and fluid looks good. The tranny fluid looks good and smells fine. Here is the problem: I have what smells like burning oil coming from underneath when I park in the garage. It almost smells like it is coming from the rear of the vehicle. I pulled the rear wheels and don't see anything out of the ordinary. The engine is clean everywhere I can see. Like I said, it doesn't lose any oil at all. Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

mine did the same thing after i had the drive shafts greased. when i drove around afterwards it flung grease onto my muffler and started to smell like burnt oil. could this be the same issue?

I am betting that you are correct. I did grease all of the zerc? fittings when I first crawled under it. ALSO. I noticed oil/grease dripping from the driveshaft. The oil appeared pretty thin. Would this be normal or do you think there is a leak somewhere along the shaft?

Thanks for the input.

yeah it sounds like it to me too. just use a putty knife and scoop off the grease and then wipe down with an old rag. the smell should clear up in a few days.
