Burning smell from engine on the 1st day

Hello All,

I picked up mine 4R yestersday, drove back home around 10km. There was a really strong plastic burning smell under the hood, interior vin and exhaust. Is that normal for the first few day(break in)? Pls advise.

There is a smell, but it's not like burning electronics or anything. All the labels and preservatives the parts are coated with needs to burn off the ones that get hot.

I think every new vehicle I've purchased has done that, my 4runner included.

You're OK. The labels, etc. as mentioned above are the likely culprits.

happened to me too. i had 7 miles on my new 4runner when i drove it off the lot. there was a burning smell too and i got worried but it went away after a few days (maybe even the next day)

It's your exhaust components burning off, it goes away your fine.

Yes as the others have also said, it is normal. We got ours last week with 11 miles on it when we drove it off the lot and our salesman said "if you can survive that smell for about another 30 miles or so of driving, it will go away", it may have taken a little more miles than that but now it just smells like a new car

Seems my last couple of trucks have done this for more than just a few weeks or months. The 4R will still do it for a minute or so after a tough workout like a hill climb, on or off road. Not the cosmoline smell, more like burning rubber.
