burning smell while descending under engine load

So I have noticed this three times over the last year. Happens when descending with some speed under engine load. 1st 2nd or 3rd gear anywhere from 5-30 mph while letting the engine control my speed rather then the brakes. Engine will climb to 2000-3000 RPM when I get this burning smell. I need to do some more testing but the rear window was down at-least this last time. Also the last time because of the downward angle the gas tank showed half full while in reality it was 3/4+ full.

What could this be? I checked around after smelling it and did not see anything out of the norm.

Planning on a five day off road trip into the San Juan Mountains in a month so want to make sure the rig is in top shape.

OK, It is the original clutch at 193K but my foot was not on the clutch pedal, gas or brake.

Exactly. The 5 speed clutch is not a viscous coupling like an automatic transmission has. There's supposed to be a one to one transmission of power when you don't have the clutch engaged, so if your RPMs are higher than normal for a given speed and transmission gear, then the clutch has to be slipping.

probably an oil leak... any visible?
