busted by nj ezpass driving the Runner

I am confused over receiving a paymnt req for failing to pay .35 toll at NJ Garden State Parkway plaza "PVK", lane 09n. Does anyone know which toll station (code PVK) this is exactly? It's one of those between NJ Tnpk (95) and 287 (Tapan Zee brdg), north bound. I believe I paid about 5 tolls (.35 each).

1.
Since my son (4 year) "helped" throwing the coins into the collection bucket at most toll booths, I am not sure if it's because the coin didn't go into the bucket or bounced out in one of those booths resulting in the payment request notice.

2.
Another possibility is one of the tolls (closer to rt 287, i think) was confusing: ez pass lanes are straight ahead and toll lanes appeared to be leading to an exit. I was NOT gonna take the "exit" so I could have missed the toll as I stayed on the ezpass lanes.

I dont have ezpass but i am innocent. ;-)

anyone in that area got any idea what's going on? would i have gotten the payment request from authority if it had been caused by possibility #1 ?

they attached a picture of the 4Runner and licence plate - high tech as it seems, the customer service # and ezpassnj.com site are both having "tech difficulties". Geez!

I know that here in California the EZpass lane is when you have a prepaid barcode sticker on your window that some automatic reader scans as you drive by and it deducts your toll. If you don't have this sticker on your window and go through you will get a ticket for not paying. That kinda sounds like what happened to you. Bummer!:(
How much they charging you?
 
you might have gone through the high speed lanes of the ezpass. its fairly new in jersey so i dont know which locations have it.

$25 admin fee plus the toll which isnt that bad but i need to understand what/how/where exactly happened.

I am from New Jersey and you can't fool that EZ-Pass system. They are serious about this toll stuff and will get a nice clear picture of your license plate. The PVK is probably the Pasaic Valley Toll Plaza. That would be one of the toll booths you would go through coming from 287 and the Tapanzee. In order to take 95, did you get off at exit 129? I don't know if you remember what lane you went through, but the high speed EZ-Pass lanes are the ones where there are no gates and you drive through some weird looking overhang with lights on top. If you were able to stop and throw coins into a bucket, I guarntee you that you didn't go through a high speed EZ-Pass lane (you would get killed if you stopped there and there are no buckets). The lanes with purple signs over them are EZ-Pass only lanes. These lanes still have buckets but they don't work. You more than likely went through an EZ-Pass only lane because that is the only lane where they take a picture of your license plate if you don't pay a toll. If you went through a cash lane and didn't pay your toll, you would only hear a bell ring. The only thing is I am not that familiar with that toll plaza because I am from central NJ and rarely use it. Most of the toll plazas on the GSP have like three seperate booths that look like they lead to an exit but they really don't. Usually, these three secluded booths are to the right. I am 99% sure that this was caused by case #2.

I recommend that you call up the number they give you on the letter and explain to them your situation. Make sure that you tell them that you are not from the area and PAID your toll at an EZ-Pass only lane. They will sometimes wave the $25.00 fee and make you pay the $0.35.
 
I think i know where it's and why. Like RayRay suggested, it's the new high speed / express E-Zpass. It's diff from the regular E-Zpass we are used to in that you can maintain highway spd and some electronic device somewhere (camera etc) overhead does the math as you drive throu. No toll plaza. The ones we / I know, even you dont accidentally end up in a ezpass lane, you can switch over to cash lanes at the plaza.

Very confusing. And the location that got me is Pascack Valley Toll, hence PVK, at exit 166 GSP north.

It's the other direction. I got in at 129 from I-95N headed to I-287 on GSP.

I did and their web site and phone sys are both dead ;-) I returned the notice with .35 paid but chose the opt to explain what happened. We'll see if they buy it.

Thx for your info. BTW, the 05 V6 4WD 4Runner calculated about 21 MPG over 280 mile one way trip, not bad. I only got about 18 MPG here using it as a daily work horse, very mixed driving.

It is funny you should mention Plainsboro because I drove thorugh that town today. I am around 30 minutes from there. That is considered central/northern NJ. I live closer to the Jersey Shore. They should accept your explanation. I know a lot of people who have EZ-Pass and get those letters sometimes. Good luck!
 
I live in Jersey and am waiting to get my letter and fine from E-Z Pass. I have my e-z pass in my other car, and just bought my runner. I went right through the e-z pass lane thinking i had it in the truck....nope...didnt have it. I'm wondering since I had temorary plates that the camera wasnt taking a picture of my back window and that I got away with it.
 
is the e-zpass "pass" for express (highspeed) lanes the same as the normal ezpass?

Yeah, both the express lanes and the regular slow 15mph E-Z pass lanes use the same E-z-pass. Only diffrence is you can drive throught the Express lanes at 65mph....and they have high speed cameras that take a shot of your 'rear" when you dont have e-z pass, or no funds in your account

I believe there are only 2 high speed ones on the Garden state parkway...one in Bergen co. up by the paramus mall...which I definetley know is there..the ohter i think is down near the raritan bridge

wow! small world. i just moved from Plainsboro at the beginning of this year. I would consider P-boro somewhat central as we're between NY + Philly within 45min or so. however, i think most people would consider Edison/ Woodbridge central NJ. regardless

there's one after the Driscol Bridge going south and then there's another by exit 98 going north. the only two i've seen/ travelled.

yeah tha Paskack Valley one is the Bergen co. one by the Paramus mall.... its right near exit 165 or 166. I travel that one alot, and its pretty funny watching people who realize at the last minute that they are in the Express e-z Pass and dont have it...they are swerving right at the last minute...i'm waiting to see someone hit right in the middle between the express and the regular.. :awais:
 
The Raritan toll booths now have high speed EZ-Pass and the Outerbridge Crossing had high speed EZ pass open last week.
 
Not sure about NJ, but the Speedpass is not battery operated. It is programmed with a specific frequency (like a credit card or speed pass from Mobil). Just don't put it on one of the de-magnetizing plates at Best Buy :-)

I have had my speed pass for 6 years and I have never done anything to maintain it.
 
Greasefingers...EZPass is battery powered. I received my new tags about 2 years ago...I believe they last around 4 years. You'll probably get a package with the new tags and an envelope to send the old ones back in.
