buying 1999 4 runner advise needed

I'm considering buying a 1999 4 runner with standard transmission and 85k miles. The check engine light has been on for several months, with no appearent problem.
I know I have to change the timing belt at 90k. Is there anything else I need to be aware of before I buy this vehicle?
Does the 1999 model have any known problems?

Welcome! Let me qualify this advice with I don't have a lot of 3rd gen experience. I do know a little though.

The 3rd gens are pretty much bullet proof with a couple of minor exceptions. The MAF sensor in the intake is a design that requires periodic cleaning (possible cause for the CEL). The other thing is they occasionally need O2 sensors, another possible cause of the CEL.

I'm moving this to the 3rd gen section to see if it gets some more looks. Placing it in Maint was probably the right thing and I'll put it back in a few days... Good luck!

whats the code? my friend just threw a 120 and it was the throttle position sensor.

I would be sure of the code. If it is a Cali. emissions (doesn't matter where you are--I bought my '99 Cali. in NJ) and you have a P0420 (Low Cat efficiency) you could be looking at $1700 to fix. Someone will chime in with URD simulator but that's chancy if your state does inspections.

I have 120K on mine since new and it has been rock solid. One clutch (two teenagers learned to shift on it), 2 o2 sensors, new swaybar bushings, and just did the timing belt/pump stuff. There are tons of folk who have also stretched out that 90k belt interval. Leaky rear axle seals is one frequent problem--I have been spared. Clock is dead and big bucks to replace, that's common, too.
