Buying 99 4runner anything specific to look for?

Hi all, i am looking at a 99 limited 4 runner, i checked the usual things windows etc... Made sure 4wd worked, checked for leaks and such but is there anything otherwise specifically i should check for that might be a problem? Thanks.

Rear axle seals and when timing belt and water pump were changed.

I second nighthawk. Rear axle seals are the most common issue on 3rd generation 4runners. Had to have one replaced on mine last year. Always want to make sure the timing belt has been serviced/replaced. Also a good idead to make sure there are not major oil leaks coming from underneath.

If the axle seals are leaking you most likely would see evidence on the backside of the drums.

I just took a 2000 in to have the PPI done and discovered that the timing belt/waterpump/drive belts were not done at 90k...$880 job (if they do it right w/ bearings and tensioner).

Also had a bad Oxy sensor.

I am still getting it, as it has new brakes, shocks, tires, and rebuilt tranny (my brother owned this thing since new).

well it only has 56k miles on it so i doubt it has hit many of the check points as far as mileage goes but age wise most parts are getting up there in years

Just bought a '99 Limited w. 144K. 56K is a rare find, mind revealing what you paid? My belt was done @ 79K, plan to wait until 180K or so to do it again. My dash clock doesn't work either, would like to know if it can be fixed but haven't opened the dash yet.

Thoughts...
- I know you said you checked for leaks, did that include the drains in the sunroof?
- What is the age on the tires? If they are older than 6 years (regardless of tread depth) they should be replaced. That goes for v-belts and coolant hoses as well, they degrade over time regardless of use.
- Cargo cover in place / working?
- A/C system fully charged?
- Condition of auto tranny fluid?
- Rear window / wiper functional?
- Is the remote fob included? How many keys?

- Anyone have pics of the symptoms of a bad rear axle seal?

Tires are done, so i need to replace those. AC system seems good.

I have to check rear wiper, window works fine. Talked to mechanic a lot of the belts were replaced 2 years ago including maf, spark plugs and a new fuel filter. New brake pads with less then a few thousand miles on them, and regular oil changes.
