Buying a 01 4runner?

I'm looking at an silver 01 toyota SR5 4x4 with and a hood vent (does this mean anything is different about the engine or is it just a neat accesory) 103,850(mileage was put on by his wife's commute which runs about 60 miles a day) running boards, moon roof, towing package, and a remote start. The 4runner has been owned by one individual and he has done the regular maintenance (I checked the records at the local dealership where he takes it) I also had my mechanic check it out and he found the axle seal was leaking and that would need to be replaced( heard its pretty common) Other than that the thing is clean I mean hardly any sratches, dings, and the seats don't hardly look worn. He is asking 14,000 with the reapirs that would be 402.00. I was going to offer him 13,000 and hopefully stay there. WHat would you do out there, its my first car purchase, I think there great trucks and I would love to be able to be involved in the forum so let me know your suggestions on the purchase. Thanks!!!!

Just hoping for some input on this vehicle. I might be buying it this afternoon!!!

You did your research? Like checked the KBB values and such? It is a nice vehicle and you should be happy with it. As far as price goes, I can't say if your getting a good deal, you need to asses that. If it just hit the market, the guy may not want to come down that low from the asking price. That happened to me with a yota pickup a while back. I waited two weeks and called him back and he came down on the price.
Good move to run it by a mechanic, though.

thanks

Yeah I have gotten my mechanic to check it out plus I got the guys maintanence records from our local dealership. the thing is clean and I know he is the only owner. I got it at 13,500.00 so I'm happy with that. Well it looks like I will be posting more stuff later, thanks

Hood scoop should be an indication of the Sport Edition package--should have the badge on the doors also.

Basically that means it comes with a hood scoop, color-keyed bumpers, and fender flares.

Engine should be a 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE.

I bought an '02 Sport Edition 4x4 last year with 30k on the clock. I've added another 30k, and have not had any serious issues with it. If you can get it, go for it.

I have a 2001 also but without the scoop. The scoop was on a special model that year - I think they called it the Highlander (not to be confused with the Toyota Highlander which is a different vehicle).. No difference in the engine. I think I remember learning the scoop was much more cosmetic than functional. I cannot remember if that model got the chrome bumper or not - 2001 had some models with the schome bumper and others didn't. If the PO didn't ever change the shocks thats probably the only thing to consider since he did the maintenance. Make sure part of that maintenance was changing the brake fluid. The 2001 has a complicated brake system and can get expensive if the parts get messed up by corrosion. Search these forums for shocks and brake fluid and you will learn some of suggestions on what to do.
