I am negotiating on a 2011 4x4 4Runner in NY thats got 5300 miles on it. Will be bringing it up to Canada. There is another 4Runner, a 2010 in Oregon for $2500 more with 7000 miles. Do I need to be worried with Rust on the NY vehicle since I am more inclined on getting that one at the lower price?

With it being so new you shouldnt have any problems yet but I'd have them take picture of the frame, under the rockers etc.... If it has been undercoated it shouldn't be an issue either. I personally avoid vehicles from the east coast for that very reason. Of course they just started using salt in Seattle damn it, man I hate salt.

No salt use in Oregon, yet. Plus, this past winter has been relatively benign and the need for gravel or chemical defrosting did not occur (if it did, it was minimal).

Just curious which area of New York are you buying from. Are you looking in the Buffalo area across from Niagara falls or are you looking in NY down across from the Thousand Island area? Doing a quick Yahoo Auto search brings up several used 2010 and 11 4runners within about 200 miles of where I live (Binghamton) but the asking prices seem high to me (typical) and there are but a handful with miles as low as you mention. Hopefully you can negotiate a reasonable price. Also, I don't think that one NY winter with road salt should be much of a concern.
Buffalo area. At Northtown. Its a 2011 that was used by the dealership owner - as described by the salesman. Has 5300 miles. Price is close to 37,000 which I think is pretty good for a limited. Does have navigation but no third row seats or running boards. I would like running boards and am negotiating a good price for it as well. For spending $37K, almost close to $40K, why you don't think to buy a new 2011 or just waite for 2012. I heard 2012 will be some update for the problems. The question is you don't know how they drived for 5300 miles on it.

I wouldn't put much stock in that article. The 4.7 V8 has been out of production for a while. Looks like a cut and paste job from a 4th gen ad.

Seems that they have simply lifted text from 4th gen reviews.

Everything is about the 4th gen 4Runner except the pictures.
I agree with the snow up here. Usually the rust in Edmonton is not bad due to the dry weather. The NY vehicle is a 2011 as compared to a 2010 in Oregon. Only thing missing in the NY car is the third row seating but I dont think I will be using it too often. Still not sure if I will be driving it or shipping it to Montana to bring it across the border. Dont mind the drive actually. Will do it around the third week of June. Should be good through Lake Country!!!

Maybe I'm just too anal, but it sounds like there is quite a bit of wear for a car with only 5000 miles on it. Did they take any pictures of the damage for you?
