Buying a 3rd generation 4runner with 167k miles

Hey everyone,

A bit about me..I'm a 27 year old full time student/worker living in Miami, FL.

Saving up to road-trip through the U.S. after I get my bachelors in about a year.

I lost my first car (350z) in an accident in 2011 and was given a 2nd generation beat up 1994 4 Runner 2wd by my uncle to go to work and school.

At first I hated it..then I fell in love with it.

Now I'm looking for a 3rd gen, and found a 1999 limited 4wd with 167k miles for $6995.

I would put 3k down and finance the rest.

Stupid idea? should I keep looking?

P.S. my 2nd Gen died on me a month ago and I'm driving a car they lent me so I need a car asap.

i just paid 7k for a 99 limited with 165k but i also had the dealership put in 2k worth of work as far as t-belt/wp job and also doing VC gaskets and spark plugs along with misc. other things related to keeping the oil inside the engine as well as exhuast work.

I would check the service history on it as well as for to see what maint. has been done in the past. If you are going on a trip In a year or 2 that stuff is a necessity so you do not have to worry about it breaking down in the middle of the trip.

I also work at the dealership I bought it from. I would strongly have them do the above work if they did not do it already do it to safe guard yourself. I would not put the full 3k down unless the bank is asking for something because of the year and also depending on your credit.

That's kind of high but my 98 with 188k miles still runs strong and every little item works aside from the sunroof sticking sometimes.

I'd buy it all over again.

I guess it depends on location as well Revel. KBB and Edmunds had my limited with all the options booking out at 7k from buying from a dealership.
