Buying a 4 runner 4X4 SR5?

It has the V6, the computer on the dash said it was averaging 18.5 mpg gallon. I took it on the freeway it averaged just over 20 mpg. Do these trucks really get that good mileage?

I will be occasionally be towing a 20 camper. 2800lbs dry. I know it won't be the fast tow vehicle. I am more concerned about how it handles with weight behind it. When we camp we rarely go more than a 100 miles from home and no steep mountains.

Does this truck have a "traler package". If they do what does it have different than a 4runner without one.

Most people will report that the display on the dash is optimistic by around 10%

Not sure whether you have a "trailer package" or not.

Mine came with a frame hitch and a tranny cooler, but not all did.

The one I looked at seemed to have an "extended" radiator, not an actual separate radiator. I have installed a radiator before that had an extra tank not separate for the actual radiator that was for a trans cooler, is this how the Toyota T cooler is designed or is it a separate radiator all together.

the toyota oem trans cooler is separate from the radiator and come on the v8 4runner as well as the frame mount hitch.

My wife averages 20mpg in town, and 22mpg on freeway and higher if i don't use the cruise control i've gotten it up to 26mpg. But that wasn't easy or fun.

The answer to the first question is yes. Completely stock they do get those mpg's. However, even just changing the type of tire you run (not the size) will affect these 4runners (not by much but still a change). If your towing anything you can toss any kind of mpg's out the door. Seeing you don't go far you should be fine.

All that being said, the wife and I really enjoy our 'o8 SR5 4x4 V6.

Yes and no. It depends on how you drive and where. My 4Runner's lifetime average is about 19.4, but I've gotten as high as 23mpg on a tank before.

I usually get 24-26 ave. on the freeway. I ave 70mph to get it butttt its worth the savings I think!

Thanks for the replies. My current tow vehicle (which I plan on trading) is a beast of a conversion van. It is rated to tow over 7k even with the conversion. It gets about half the mpg of the Toyota. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it was not a very good tow vehicle so I am a little worried down sizing. I do have an older ¾ ton ford if I need anything larger moved.

I am going to see if I can work out a deal on it this evening.

It will be spending the night and many more in my garage. Everything worked out and so far I am happy first time toyota owner.

I've used all 3 of my T4R's for towing; all V6's and progressivly larger engines.

I currently tow a 17' glass bass boat with the 4.0L in my '08 Sport. Compared to the 3.slow that was in my '90 T4R and the 3.6L that was in my '00, this 4.0 kicks butt (comparitively).

Mileage wise, the onboards tend to be about 2 MPG conservative. But at a steady highway cruise of 70 MPH I average, pump-to-pump, about (hand calculated) 19-20 MPG; at a steady cruise of 60 MPH about 22-24 MPG. I've even gone thru almost an entire tank of gas at 50 MPH (don't ask) and got a bit better than 26 MPG. Towing the boat at 65 MPH and you're talking about 16-17 MPG. Hills will destroy mileage as will higher ethanol content fuel.
