Buying a 4Runner '99

When buying a 1999 4Runner what is a decent amount of miles i should be looking for on the car and what is a reasonable price for this car? This will be my first car ever bought at the end of this summer.

miles you can find anything from 100k-300k+, personally I wouldn't buy one over 200k but that's just me.
As far as price anywhere from $3500-$12000, depending on 4wd, limited/sr5, elocker or lack of, amount of rust. You can easily find a good one for $5000-$7000

couldn't have said more. i got a deal on mine with 140,000mi at $6000. sr5 4wd runners have yet to disappoint me. ( just check those fluids)!!!!!

Its very complicated if you don't know how the engine, transmission and axles work, among other things.

Both diff's are "open" on 4runners. So if you have the elocker it will lock up the two back wheels. With open diff's once a wheel loses traction it will just spin and the other wheel on that diff will sit there. With the elocker both rear tires will spin even if one is off the ground because it's locked. 4 wheel drive is really two wheel drive and if you have the elocker you have 3 wheel drive. Its an added feature on some runner, most did not come with them.

Most everything is easily reparable or fixed... But I'd find out when the timing belt was last replaced (They should be good for 100k+) and to inspect the transmission fluid to make sure it doesn't smell burnt, look bad or have metal particles in it. (Just pull the dip stick).

A lot of great info on what to look out for. As far as prices, expect to pay a bit of a premium in this state. Don't be shy about looking outside of the state too. Just make sure to look at the history of a vehicle. I personally didn't want to buy one where rust might be an issue.
