buying a sport! any advice?

ok everyone.. after researching and lots of help from all of you, i'm going to check out (and hopefully buy) a 2002 sport T4R!

any things to look for specifically when i go to check this baby out? It is "toyota certified", has 64K miles. . . hoping to buy for about $14.5K - $15K.

Going in the morning to check her out so any advice or words from the wise are appreciated!

Definetly get the price closer to $14k flat since 3rd gen values have taken a hit with 4th gens going into their 5th year of production.

Since it's being bought at a Toy dealer and it's certified you shouldn't have too much to worry about especially with only 64k on the odo. I have 126k on mine and only the axle seals were replaced at 100k otherwise mine has had just regular maintenance.

YAY! it's true, about the 4th generations going into blah blah blah.. but 3rd generations look the best and ARE the best!!! haha.
so i got it for $14K! she's a beauty i can't wait to put some add ons and fun things down the road

What's the difference between SR5 and Sport?

BTW, did you buy a 2WD or a 4WD ?

4x4 all the way. way to many fun opps lost with a 2x.

I'm no expert, and only going from my comparisons on my '02 SR5 and my '02 SPORT. . .

The ride one the sport ride seems smoother than the SR5 (i've been told this is normally true) because of the fact that it's built for off roading? That's my guess. . .

there are little cosmetic things like the scoop hood (which apparently does nothing unless it's an overseas vehicle). . . etc. etc.

i love the new baby though.. i'm excited to sprucer her up with some yummy accents.

gotta love them sport. yeah, the Sport tends to ride a smoother then the sr5. oh yeah forgot to ask for PICTURE!!!!!!! =)

1) Hood scoop
2) Silver dash trim
3) Front skid plate
4) Clothe seat no leather =(
5) I think it also comes with 16" disc brake & rim not 15" wheels
6) It rides different smooth not like a SR5

we can be twins :rocker:, but only for another month or two before it gets a big big make over. 6" lift, wheels, brake conversion, Jaos rear spoiler, & hope i can put the Jaos brush guard on.

oh on a side not. you should check your vin with the dealer. to see if the recall has been done to it or not yet. lower ball joint recall just like the 04-07 Tundra & Sequoia. Just got my notice today in the mail. :nono:

thats the reason why i am getting the lift and all parts put on at once then off to the dealer for the ball joint & aligment. :biggrin2:

You're saying that SR5 is a rougher,stiffer, ride than a Sport? And that is because Sport it is more 4x4ish?

I always thought that a 4x4 would be stiffer and not the other way around. So why is my thought process wrong?

the sport is stiff too, but the way the SR5 bounce and the way it ride it just cant be explain. *shrugs* . even my gf knows the different, and she dont know swat about cars & trucks. she owned a SR5 prior to this 02 sport. try to get your hands a Sport give it a test drive to see what a different it is.

But all that can be changed with a new set of shocks, right? Anything out there worth switching to?

that i wouldnt know yet. i would need to get in my other friend's 4runner which is a SR5 with Blisten shocks. i dont even know what is the best shock or good shocks out there. but i guess you should buy shocks for what your needs are?

how much are you selling the ome 3" lift for?

There's is no diff in suspensions between the Sport and SR5 or even the limited models. The '01-'02s did get the shorter coils but you can upgrade to the taller version of the '99 coils relatively cheap if you want the 1"+ lift whiole maintaining the stock ride.

Where are you located? I've been hunting for a 2001-2002 Sport Edition and they are all in the $17k range (with 70-90k miles) around here. I only wish the SE had auto-climate control like the Limiteds. But I hate leather seats more, so I'm going to go with the SE.
