buying a used 4 runner... help please

I'm going to look at a 1998 4 runner with 290k miles and the guy says the oil light comes on
When idling sometimes when hot.. but says it's been doing it for along time so if I check it out and there's no rattles or anything would it be safe to figure it was sending unit? Anyway to check it before I buy without replacing the sending unit?

It may come on because it's doing it's job.
Oil pressure maybe low. All that mileage and age, it may need an oil pump, or more.

I'd say it's almost certainly not the sender.

What should the oil pressure be ideling?

You might get more help if you post in the 3rd gen section. Do you have a pressure gauge? There is none in a 3rd gen.
