Buying a used 4runner

I am thinking about buying a 4 runner with my tax returns and I was just wondering if anybody could give me any info. that would help me in deciding, or just your personal fav. and why... Anyway any info to make my decision easier.. ohh and I have about $6000 to spend and live in arizona.

I just bought a 2000 T4R with 68k miles, no dints/scratches. Great condition, clean interior. Runs great, for only 13500$. Pretty cheap.

That is more than twice as much as he wants to spend. Probably a 95 (2nd gen) or a 96 (third gen) would be your best bet. If you could I would try to swing a 3rd gen. with air bags and a bigger V6 with better gas mileage to boot. Of course 2nd gen. are pretty nice vehicles.
 
Search a while and you'll find a higher mileage (90k+) 3rd gen for under $7k or even less. I would definetly hold out for the newer Runner since you'll have more power plus better creature comforts than a 2nd gen.
 
I have a 96 4Runner in mint condition for sale. I'm asking around $7500.

Need to make room for the 06!

I am in the same boat as ct430. I have a 1997 T4R SR5 in mint condition for sale pending the delivery of my 2006 Limited that is on order. I am asking $7,000.
 
depends on what you want to do with it I bought a 1st gen cause of the removable top and for offroading though I know guys with 06s that run just as hard or harder than I do in my 89. I would look closer to the 4k to 5k range though cause there is stuff your gonna buy for it no matter what year/ gen you get. IMO if I had 6k to spend I would look for a built 1st gen
 
As I stated in a recent post, I had a 96 4Runner for sale for $7,500. Turns out that the first person that looked at it bought for my asking price. As a point of reference, I had 124k miles on it.

For LSUMBA, I took delivery 1 week ago of the exact vehicle you have on order. I waited 11 weeks for to come in. It is beautiful...

A friend of mine just sold his 98 Limited 4X4 for $6,400. It has been posted for sale on local Newspaper since Dec, and the asking price was $7,950. Most of the caller offered him around 6K. Finally, a young college student got it for $6.4k. BTW, the vehicle is in immaculate condition with 146K miles on it.
To the original poster. If you're not in a hurry, shop around to find the best 4Runner for your money.

I don't mean to hijack the thread.

I am on week 9 & I have not been given any update other than "It is still in Japan being built" Of course, that update is 2 weeks old. For all I know, it is sitting on a slow boat to Georgia as we speak!

How good was your dealer about telling you about changes in the status while you were waiting? My guy doesn't even have a VIN # for me yet.

well I just want something that I can drive on a daily basis if I need to but I will prob. primarily use it on the weekends, going camping and a medium amount 4X4ing. And I am planning on getting a small like 12 or 15 ft john boat that i would pull sometimes on the weekends usually just locally with it though.. I also want it to be able to pull a slightly larger speed boat a couple of times a year..... I am leaning towards a 94 or 95 because I like the 2nd gen body and they added safety features in the doors in 94..

But I was wondering somebody posted that the 3rd gen has more powwer and gets better gas milage??? How do the two compare????

I was the one posting about the mileage. Some 2nd generation owners have complained about how thirsty they can be. You might want to do a search. A third gen will probably get a bit better. Of course choosing a 4 cyl, V6, manual or automatic transmission, 4 wheel drive, different rear axles can make one model more of a gas guzzler than another.

I think getting a 2nd generation is good, getting a 3rd gen for your money might be a bit of a strecth. The biggest thing to look for is rust, hopefully being in Arizona you might have better luck.

Another option you might consider is getting a 4 cyl. 3rd genration model. It has about the same power as a 2nd gen V6. You can tow 3,500 pounds, more than enough for a john boat. The engine is known to last and it has a timing chain. They can come in 4 WD and even a manual or automatic. It will be a bit slow of course, but if you can find one they are a bit cheaper. I would just keep that as a option, if you see one, you might want to look at it.

I looked for a few months before I located one nearby. I purchased a '98 SR5 4WD 5SPD w/ 100k for $8900. I know you're looking for $6k, but if you look long enough, you'll find it! The only regret I have is that I didn't find one sooner.

Actually I was wondering at what mileage do you think around a 94-94 4runner will die at.. I know it depends on how well it is taken care of but is it allot for them to make it to 250k or even 300k???? just wondering how durable and long lasting they are
 
By what I've read here on the board, most seem to last well into the 200-300k range if well taken care of. I'd like to think that I'll get another 100k outta mine...

Im was just wondering because i see allot that are for sale with around 200 215k and I'm wondering how they can still be worth $5-6k so hopefully they are pretty reliable and last quite a while...
