Buying Advice For A Used 4runner

I'm currently looking to buy a used 4runner. I will take it off-road a few times a year, but nothing too serious - usually Forest Service dirt roads. Do any model years or generations stand out as being more mechanically sound than others? I want it to last for years and to be able to take it on long trips without worry. I'm also not too fond of the newer, larger body styles ('03 and newer).

Any advice would be helpful.

Since you're won't be off-roading a lot and you take your truck on long drives, i think that you are selling yourself short by not looking at the newer more comfortable 4runner. Every generation before the 4th gen ('03 and newer) can be uncomfortable on long trips.

I agree with Thai. I owned a 98 4runner and while I loved it, it never really did what I needed outdoors (I actually ended up rolling it upsidedown on a dirt access road). I finally gave in and bought the new model (an 05) with the body look I don't really prefer either and it's really grown on me. I took it up a heavy dirt trail this weekend and broke it in and it did awesome, much smoother than the 98.

I'm also looking to buy a used 4runner with the insurance money I'm getting for a stolen truck. Specifically, my price range allows me to look at 1990 through 1999 4runners.

Are there any specific mechanical problems to look for during these years?

I've driven friends' 4runners and I like them. mainly, I need something that will have some life left in it and won't end up being a money pit.

also, I need 4x4.

I am in your same shoe

After long research and comparisons of various years, trims, vendors, finally got my 99 SR5 4WD in March. Although it got 130000 miles on it, I think this one is ok based on its condition, its Carfax report, it wasn't from out of state, was originally purchased in Santa Monica and maintained in Santa Monica Toyota Dealer through out the years under one original owner. It is an auto tranny with cloth interior.

I wish I can start modify it slowly and plan to drive it til the last wheel fall off. This is my first 4x4 baby.
