Buying New 4runner Saturday, Couple Questions!

I have it. I've used it. It's great even for putting around the fields looking for deer. Is it required? Nope.

'Useful or marketing gimmick' is a sliding scale and totally depends on personal perspective.

I'm sure there's people that think ABS systems, traction control systems, air bags, blue tooth, cruise control, ATRAC, air lockers, and on and on are all gimmicks and totally unnecessary if you just knew how to drive.

If not mandated, would you pay for ABS? ATRAC? Cruise control? Airbags? It's a rhetorical question of course.

Remember when fuel injection came out? People hated the 'new fangled expensive technology'. It's complicated, unreliable, and you can't work on it. "You should be able to work on a carburetor or not be allowed to drive." ; ) Same with power windows. "I'm not paying for that crap just so it breaks on me later and I have to pay to have it fixed."

Anyways, it's cool technology and I'm glad the market is there for companies to spend time and money developing technology for the off road enthusiast. Crawl control is unnecessary. No doubt. But it's not 'worthless' in my personal opinion.

3rd row is not standard. It does fold up flat into the floor, but because the 4runner is BOF that means the floor is raised up about 3 inches. You don't lose width in the cargo area like you do with a land cruiser 3rd row but you do lose a couple of inches of height in the cargo area. According to the Toyota's stats and brochure its about a 1 cu. ft loss in cargo area total.

FYI: I have not found I've needed that extra 1 cu. ft of cargo space but I have used the 3rd row a bunch with kids and grandparents.

CC also doubles as your hill descent control which can come in handy. Remember along with CC you also get multi terrain select, but the most important thing you get is a locking rear diff.

You can question the value and need of the other items, but if you're going off-road a locking rear diff. can be extremely useful to get you out of a jam.

Plus, as mentioned by [MENTION=96008]Engineer[/MENTION] , there are other slight differences. The black interior trim made the cabin look significantly better to me. I also really like the TE rims, and didn't intend to upgrade to aftermarket rims. I love the manual transfer case lever. These are all personal preference of course.

Agreed. If I get stuck somewhere, its another tool to try before getting out and using another physical form of recovery, or worse, calling for help. If it works, great! Needed? No. Convenient and worth a try? Sure. Worth upgrading to trail just for CRAWL? No. But I wanted the other things that OP doesn't want, so more power (and money) to him! Best of luck OP.

That video that was posted here was awesome. I forget who it was, but they buried the ass end in sand, and then just basically jumped the truck up and out of the sand.

Really cool example of this "fabled gimmick".

Several people mentioned lever v knob on Trail v SR5,but the SR5 is available with a lever. The Trail is only available with a lever - as God intended.

SR5 is available with no 3rd row, and the 3rd row eats up a TON of space in the cargo area, they can say it's 1c/f but it is a big 1 c/f if that's the case.

It is border line worthless in my opinion. I could go into all the reasons why, but to get straight to the point... The driver is not in control of wheel speed or momentum. That makes it basically useless for all but the most simple terrain.

It does have a very narrow use case, but we are talking razor thin here.

If you think it is special and useful, great... But get out and try some really technical trails and see how often you can leverage it.
 
Below invoice is not a fabled thing. I never pay for MSRP, everything is negotiable. You can get any vehicle at invoice or even way below you are just going to have to negotiate and its really about good timing. Buy when they are trying meet quota's and can even get at invoice for the color of the vehicle and type you want. People were spending 49 OTD for the new 16 Pilot Touring AWD that's not even the elite and I got offers OTD for below 43K OTD for that same Pilot and it was even arriving until 7 January 16 for a black on black. What's the invoice for a 2016 4x4 base SR5? Close to 35K, I got mines at 32,500 so it is possible.

True invoice on a base 4WD SR5 is around $33k (once you've removed holdback and dealer reserve).
