If I were to order, I'd probably try to find someone to weld them on, but I figure there may be a downside of some sort.

There is a rationale as to why. One of the reason, not the only is that C4 fabrication does not offer powder coating and/or any sort of finish on their products. If these plates were to be welded onto the slider, it'd be hard to achieve a solid failproof and rustproof finish on the surface beneath the plates where it comes in contact with the slider tube. a few years down the road, and even with the best powder coating/ paint treatment that area can and will be prone to rusting. 100%

An alternative to screwing them down would be to use a HD black stainless steel rivet of the same diameter ( or slightly larger) and tap that in for a forever solid installation. That's my personal take on it, and in no way shape or form is C4 condoning such modification. Hence why they provide you with the necessary hardware.

andrewnasrallah is correct. We make them attach with hardware so that the step plates can be powder coated all the way around front and back.
If you want them welded on then I'm sure a shop could do it for you. We just don't offer that as an option because all of our step plates are made with the holes cut into them for installation hardware. We would have to weld those holes shut and sand them flush to make the finish look right and that would take a lot of extra time.
Also many of our customers like the ability to use an offset/accent color on the step plates to make them stand out a bit from the slider.

Very interested in purchasing a set of these when the group buy is running again.

Installed a set of these on my buddies 4Runner last week and the quality is top notch. Very robust design, spot on welds and easy to install. True position tolerance of the slotted holes is very liberal which makes the install painless and makes sense from a design/manufacturing standpoint (not all frames are the same). The one issue we found with this design was deformation/concaving of the washers when torqued on the oversized slotted holes. A possible solution would be to use flanged bolts to distribute the load over a larger surface area and reduce compressive stresses. Doubling up on washers may help too assuming you have full thread engagement.

Thanks for the kind comments! We do currently use flange bolts and grade 8 washers. If you really crank the bolts down they will concave the washers a bit, but we have not experienced any issues whatsoever with strength or bolts loosening because of that.

Yes we use paypal as a payment option, you can also use a regular debit or credit card as well.
