I am curious too..None of these guys talked anything about the additional coating. I am wondering if it does serve any additional purposes.

The additional coating they are probably talking about is a zinc rich primer that goes on as the first coating, then the color gets sprayed on top of that as a second coat. The zinc rich primer withstands harsh weather better for those people who live in areas that have winter weather that tends to eat away at the powder coat more quickly.

Do I paint the whole slider including the plate that buts up against the frame?
I thought I remember somewhere that we are not to paint the plate that mounts tot he frame, it might have been for powdercoat though due to the buildup on the surface. Thanks guys

Powder coating or painting everything including the step plates is necessary or the bare steel will rust quickly. You’re thinking of them saying to not use Line X because the added thickness makes the holes not line up correctly. If you go the paint route there’s a lot of prep work involved including heating up the steel first to remove any moisture so it doesn’t rust under the paint. C4 recommends powder coat. There’s a whole thread C4 started called show off your sliders that explains the paint process vs powder coating and shows different powder coat options. Many people like to make their step plates a different color or texture. That thread will give you all the info you could possibly need. LOL Hope that helps!

Cleaning sanding and cleaning again right now. Don’t know if I’ll Ben able to hear it up. Guess I’ll Ben painting in the garage this weekend as I’ll be gone for 3 months starting next weekend

Went and picked mine up today from the freight dock. Nicely wrapped and packaged on a skid. Looking forward to have those installed once powdercoated.
One inquiry that I have and could not find any explanation to in the instructions online, and I hope someone who has already installed theirs can chime in on this, in the bag of hardware provided there is a long bolt about 3 1/2 - 4 inches long with its proprietary nut and lock washer. Where exactly does this one go?

Mine are non KDSS, but I think the passenger side is pretty much the same. The long bolt went on the passenger side in the middle of the rock slider frame where there is a hole with no threads. It goes bolt, washer, then on the other side of the frame, another washer, the lock nut, and the regular nut. If you read the instructions for sliders w/out KDSS for the passenger side, it explains it very well. Good luck!

fyi. start with the passenger side first. the kdss side was the most time consuming and frustrating at times.
I'm new to all this so any help is appreciated. In the going to get my sliders powder coated and with the zinc primer.
Are people taking the foot plates off before powder coating? Should I remove them so the entire tube and the underside of the plates are also coated?
If so, I'd like the screw heads to be coated as well, do I have the shop powder coat those separately, or just put the screws back in the tube during the powder coating?
Is there any prep that I should be doing to the sliders before taking them into the shop? My understanding is they'll sandblast them beforehand, but unsure if I need to do anything like removing oils or grease or something else.
Thanks in advance for any information. This is all new territory for me. Excited to get them on.

Greetings.
I would advise you to go ahead and remove the step plates from the rock slider assembly, and bring them along to your powder coating facility of choice. It is necessary that the whole slider assembly along with the steps to be powder coated entirely all around separately to ensure full coverage and maximum coverage from rust and corrosion.
As to prep work, you do not to do anything at all as far getting the assemblies ready, as sandblasting takes care of all the steps, that is Cleaning the surface and etching.
As to your concern in regards to keeping the self threading torx screws from mounting the step plates on the slider body or not, that's something to be discussed with the personnel performing the job. I would advise against it as to run into the issue of them binding and seizing in their tapped holes after being blasted, primed and coated which adds a surface on any exposed threads on the screws.

Got them on this past weekend... super happy with the workmanship by C4 Fabrication and Tuff Powder Coating in Dallas!
From an install standpoint, I highly recommend taking the optional step in the instructions of temporarily removing the 4th bolt from the rear driver’s side end of the factory gas tank skid plate to get the skid to hang down low enough... not sure if I would’ve been able to get the driver’s side slider on without it... I fought with it for a little bit before giving up and removing that bolt and then it went on easily. I saw an install video as well where they completely removed the skid and called that a good idea to do, but that feels like overkill because one of the skid plate’s bolts is pretty hard to get a wrench to without a flexible socket wrench.

Plates/steps: $40 each
Zinc primer: $100 for all pieces
Total = $610
That's the first quote I've received. They claim to do a lot of off-road vehicles so I figured the pricing would be reasonable. Going to keep looking.

That is absolutely outrageous.
In my case, I had my powder coater simply sandblast and prime the rock sliders, and I painted them myself. A few flat black cans later, and looks just as good as PC. Easier to touch up. Also went with bed liner on the steps. They are no show piece, and they'll be roughed up in no time, I couldn't justify having them powderocated only to bash them. It'd hurt me to have that nice expensive powder coated surface go to waste.

I finally settled with a quote of $175 for the pair--the guy charged an additional 120 for sandblasting but he suggested that is really not needed after looking at the sliders (something because of cold rolled steel vs other option)
I also chose a single tone..additional color for the step plate wouldve been 50 more but I preferred the all black look!
OFC, all this is in Portland Oregon..not sure how much it varies through the country.

They seem to do just one per year, typically in the spring. I think they may have run a sale some other time, as well, but I don’t remember exactly when. Your best bet is to contact Caleb at C4 and ask him.

We typically only do one per year. We do not have any sales coming up anytime soon. Possibly Labor Day or something like that since we are not planning an Independence Day sale. It all depends on what our workload is looking like at the time.
