C4FAB Bumper Coating... Paint / Powder Coat / Bed Liner

Obviously there are about 70 of us getting new bumpers from the group buy.

You guys/gals have any thoughts on painting vs powder vs bed liner?

I am not a big fan of PC, if it chips there is no good way to fix it...

I am really thinking about painting (automotive paint not rattle can)...any thoughts?

A good powder coat job won't chip very easily. Mine has gone through two New York winters with no chips. Paint is gonna chip. Guaranteed. As long as it's not a custom color I guess you could easily touch it up. Not a big fan of bedliner. They fade from the sun and very hard to keep clean especially on the front where you'll have all kinds of bug splatters.

Interested to see what people have to say also.

I ruled out bed liner because that is not the look I am going for, I don't want any texture.

I am definitely not going to use plastidip, it is already scratched on my back bumper valance. Not impressed, and I put plenty of coats on.

i would just paint then rattle can for touchup of scratches

if you really want to take the time you could POR-15 the whole thing, I've dragged my rear hitch on rocks a bunch and haven't scratched or chipped the POR-15 on it. (POR-15 on new metal will require the metal prep or just get the kit that has everything)

Personally I like PC, even on sliders and skids. Gives a good base layer that's a solid coat and doesn't chip, fade or rust as easily. If it gets scratched or damaged I chase with a rattle can.

Never been a fan of bed liner on bumpers. Once you get bug guts or dirt in those textured areas it's a PITA to get out.

I would probably powder coat if it's not too expensive, or paint with a high quality industrial epoxy paint. I like Imron paint or similar two part coatings. They're not quite as glossy or flat as good automotive paint, but they are super durable. That's what I painted my sailboat with and it's super durable. But it'll cost about as much as powder coating and be a lot more work because the powdercoating will include sand blasting and prep work. If you paint - you'll have to do all that yourself.

I have a small folding trimaran. It's a Scarab 18 that I modified the design a bit on to make it more of a daysailer - less cabin more cockpit. I though it sounded like fun when I started. 1000 hours later I was wondering why I didn't just wait for a good deal on a used factory boat. But it's kinda perfect for my use - fast enough to have fun and stable enough for comfortable cruising.

I had Caleb from C4 use his guy and so far so good, no chips or issues with bumper. I have ran thru quite a bit with it. You can see small scratches and such but no chips or anything gone to metal.

....my sliders however within 30 minutes of install were all f'd up!

Rattle Can

Congrats! I used rattle can for my C4 sliders, skid, and front bumper. These inevitably get scratched and it is easier to touch up.

I used duplicolor perfect match on the front bumper and am really happy with how it turned out. It's all prep work and there are some tough to reach spots under the winch plate. Take your time and it will turn out great.
