CA emissions headache - new cat

Hi all, thought I'd share my experience with getting a new catalytic converter for my 2003 4Runner. Hopefully this may help someone so that they won't have to deal with the mess I did.

Bank 1, Sensor 1; went to the dealership and they confirmed the cat was bad. The quote was $1400 to replace (w/labor)...yeah right. I went on the CA emissions website (Aftermarket Catalytic Converter Database) and found the correct cat for my test group (3TYXT04.0FFP). Summit had it available (part #APH-741149) but said they COULD NOT ship it to CA. Ridiculous right? I reached out to them and they are in the process of updating the listing so that it can ship to CA (well duh, most of their sales are going to be from CA addresses).

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but our 4th gens aren't getting any younger and many cats are starting to fail. Hope this info might be helpful to others.

Yeah such a pain dealing with CA smog laws/components

On a side note- Bank 1, Sensor 1 O2 sensor is pre-cat which doesn't monitor catalyst efficiency?

So Im a little confused. Did they change the information AND ship the cats to you or are you still waiting?

Yes, that was my impression; they were going to update the listing on THEIR side. But we know that doesn’t mean anything until it arrives on my doorstep.
 
Ok cool. So you were able to order the cats, pay and arrange delivery. Now you are just waiting for shipping. Please keep us updated because I need to do this too.
 
I always wondered what would happen if I was on a road trip in a different state and decided to have my cat repaired when not in CA due to some cat codes popping up… I mean really after its been installed and it works, does it even matter?

Alternately, perhaps it’s some to start smuggling in black markets cats into CA. You never know, I might end up selling it to an undercover emissions professional and I might be the next guy on this forum with a thread about how I just beat a felony but got my 4Runner confiscated.

Summit Racing says they on back order until at least 3/11/19. I will call them back on Monday 25th and they will call AP exhaust and see if there is a more firm date.

Im getting down to the wire on this because my sons truck needs registering in March and we need to do smog first.

We are going to try out the anti-foulers today to see if we can get a reading that is appropriate, but that's just an interim process because we understand its illegal to do that in CA. Grrrrr.

Still no reply from ExhaustKing. They don't show a ph. # so I wonder if they are even in business now...
 
BTW Okie...you said you had issues with Bank 1 Sensor 1.

You realize these sensors are not measuring cat. efficiency? They are the air flow sensors. For cat efficiency you are looking at Sensor 2 of Banks 1 and 2 (after the cat)
 
Spoke with AP Exhausts yesterday.

The specific part #'s are
APH-741149 (left side)
APH-741150 (right side)

They current have only a few of the right side available, and the left is out of stock with a requisition in for a production run of 50, set for availability end of March 2019.

Do you just need to pay the yearly registration or are you registering it in his name? You can pay the registration without getting smogged if it's already in your name and then smog later. Typically you can get away with 2 months on expired tags before you start getting hassled for it.
 
Truck is in my name. We bought it about six months ago. Paid the rego fees but cant get the sticker until smog is done. Registration runs out April 12.

You've got time. I was 3 months expired before I got hassled about it, and of course I got pulled over 2 days after I passed smog.

Late to the game on this, sorry for the delay. To clarify, it was the Toyota dealership that told me that the cat was toast. Did you ever get the cat from Summit? Yes, that was my comment on the website.

Sure enough, after replacing the cat and upstream O2 sensor (sensor 1) the pO420 popped up again:mad: a few weeks later, and about every 500 miles since.

I bought a BlueDriver OBDII sensor this week (which is waaay better than the "code only" scanners). Tracked some live data on the four O2 sensors:
Bank 2 Sensor 2
Band 1 Sensor 2
Bank 2 Sensor 1
Bank 1 Sensor 1


The erratic readings on Bank 1, Sensor 2 suggest that it's the bad sensor, but I don't have much experience interpreting this kind of data.
 
Swap both sensor 2s with each and see if the code follows the sensor. Also see if you can look at cross counts and do some research on what is normal. Been a long time since I looked into o2s but that is where I would start.

If your smog technician is a stickler (or if you are getting a government inspection for some reason), the numbers on your cats might get checked and if they are not CARB-compliant then you will fail. That’s why it’s always smart to go to those smog testing shops in the ghetto because they don’t care

No, I did not buy new cats. My tech was able to sort it out and get the truck to pass. :banana:
