Just so happens that a few years ago I had the same questions about the Cabin Filters.
I went to Home Depot and purchased a 3M filter and made 4 Cabin filters for my 4Runner.
They perform VERY WELL and best of all, cost me about $4 each.

How often do ppl change these out?? At a certain distance driven or when its summer and everything is filtering through your channels...for instance here we go through lots of smokey days. Fire season kills my allergies. Would it be best to change out often when air conditions are bad "enough"?
I do mine every spring, both vehicles.

Once a year on mine , watch for clearance sales on rockauto , got a bunch a few years back for $3 each lol
I'm a fan of Premier Air Filters. They are known as "simpleairfilters" on ebay, and they are slightly cheaper there.
2003 - 2009 Toyota 4Runner - Carbon Cabin Air Filter
Search for eBay item number 250869527370.
Who knows if the carbon does anything, but they are dense filters that catch a lot of dust. They restrict the max fan speed a bit, but it's worth it for the dust collecting ability. I changed mine after a trip with 100+ miles of dirt roads last year, and there was about a half inch of dirt in it. That would have been a half inch of dirt that made it inside otherwise.
I bought a Toyota filter from the dealer once, and I returned it because I could see straight through. That would be good for catching leaves, bugs, mice, and not much else.
Looks like it's been almost a year, so I should order another one.

I had the 6 month old 4K mile cabin filter replaced by me . reason was I was in a sugar sand area with construction stirring up this fine dust.. then the fires smoke. this is in sw florida.. being from NE had no problems, but day one in this area the filters where thrown out and replaced with carbon cabin air filters by WIX. cost $20 .. well worth it me and wife had no more breathing problems.
on replacing it depends where your at.. up in new england the pollen in my area you have to do this every JUNE.. that is when all that pollen is done. if not then the ac will not work good !!!!
OEM IMO IS crap................
just looking at it its crap ... toyota lets do a better job ...
my GM 2000 truck have far better filter 10 X better..

[MENTION=85375]Brookey_813[/MENTION] I think it depends on the user and their preferences (and of course conditions encountered). The worse the conditions encountered or more particular the preference, the more frequently it should be changed.
I took the lazy option and just set one of the user definable maintenance reminders for every 10k miles... in ~3yrs of owning this 4Runner, it seems to be a good interval for me and what I put it through.
I got this one. "K&N VF2002 Cabin Air Filter". Wasn't cheap... lol

This is the same filter I use, it can be easily clean and re-used for "life" (K&N states 10 years/100,000 miles) so even thought yes it was expensive I will never have to buy another!!

I take mine out & clean them every month / replace every yr ! Pretty simple
What's a user definable maintenance reminder, and how do you set it?

Its the "Personal" icons on the Maintenance menu under the INFO menu ... guess I have mine set to 15k, not 10k like I thought
