Cabin Noise

When I am at highway speed it is very difficult to hear the other caller when using the hands free bluetooth through the car audio system. I have the volume up to 50 and it is still difficult. I usually wait until I arrive at my destination or I am at non highway speeds, to return the call. I generally try to not be on the phone when driving, but some calls I take. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, what are possible solutions within reason. Thanks.

If you're referring to road/wind noise about the only fix is to add sound deadening material to the insides of the body panels, this unfortunately requires removing the interior trim&door panels plus headliner if you go that far.

Other than that, a different tire selection that's quieter if you also have a lot of tire noise.

My 4th gen is very quiet with the right tires, the right road surface, and the right wind direction. What tires do you run? To me that makes the biggest difference to cabin noise.

Are you talking about the optional factory Handsfree system? I haven't really seen that many of those in person to be honest with you.

If you are talking about the factory system, there isn't that much hope I don't think. I ran into a similar issue on an older Toyota or two before, basically it's just old technology. The microphones and software are just old and the quality wasn't that great when it was new-ish (keep in mind we're talking early gen hands-free calling stuff here).

Newer systems tend to be set up with better microphones and software to try and filter out background noise. You might be better off investing in an aftermarket solution.

Make sure your phone volume is all the way up. When it’s super quiet, I’ll press my volume button and sometimes it’s way low. And if it’s an iPhone, I swear it’ll be at full volume for ringer and min volume for music. Just double check it, who knows.

Buy a Mercedes; it's much better in the cabin.

My son put a Pioneer head unit in his Jeep.
It has its own mic, and works as well as any factory Bluetooth I've seen.
Better than the one in my wife 2016 JKU.

My 03’ is very quiet, hardly any noise at all and rarely have hands free above 10... But I’m coming from a TJ...

Not really. I have a 2015 E class and tires are louder after 10k miles than my 03 4runner with Wrangler MT/R.

I know this was a few years ago- but I'm curious to know what tires you run. Mine are so loud.
