cali ECU vs fed ECU

have a 97

Also have engine/trans/complete wire harness/ECU from 99 Cali emissions.

I'm wondering if I can use the Cali wire harness and pickup a federal ECU from 99-00. I'm guessing if I ran the Cali ECU with 1 cat it would toss cell codes.

does anybody know if it's plug and play or will I have to re-pin?

end game is to get trans temp. I'm assuming all the ODBII stuff just flows from the sensors/ECU.

any help is appreciated

Definitely NOT plug-n-play. Different connectors, etc. '99 uses electronic power steering idle up. You may be able to re-pin, but the connector pins may even be different between the two ECUs...

I know the 97 and 99 have different power steering setup's yes. I know the 97 wire harness will not work with a 99 ECU

my question is...

I have a complete 99 wire harness from a Cali setup

if I get a federal ECU from a 99 will it just plug into the cali wire harness? the o2 sensors might be in slightly different locations but... that is not a big deal.

the 99 cali vs 99 federal have different part numbers for engine wire harness. like frames interchange for 4wd auto between all the years even though they have different part numbers. just not sure if they used totally different connectors on the ECU cali vs fed? for the same years.

Looks like the connectors are compatible between the CA and Fed emissions models for 2000, my '99 EWD is a hard copy at home... The AF sensor vs front O2 sensor is the only obvious difference. Also, make sure you don't have/use a transponder ECU - it won't start if you don't have that setup right...

The '99 4x4 A/T 5VZ California Spec 4Runner ECU is part number 89661-3D600. The '99 4x4 A/T 5VZ Federal Spec 4Runner ECU is part number 89661-3D570. The connectors on the ECUs are the same and look like this:

I will grab a non transponder 99,00 federal 4x4 auto trans ecu

I can’t see any reason it would not work so I think I will give it a try.

Right it will need to be a non transponder base SR5, lim ECU is prob a bad idea.

There’s no distinction between a limited ECU and a non-limited ECU, they were all the same. Every 5VZ ECU starting in ‘99 had the capability to work with an immobilizer system. It is my belief that it’s the car’s immobilizer that would prevent a car from starting, not the actual ECU itself. If your car has no immobilizer system in it, I believe an ECU with previous immobilizer transponder values stored in it will work without needing to be re-flashed.

Having done a whole bunch of research on reflashing, I'm thinking that non-Immo vehicles (SR5 only?) simply don't have one or two plugs. I say this because I've seen where someone swapped ECU's, used the OLD one to power the Immo during startup and then unplugged it and the vehicle kept running. I looked at a Ton of threads/pages/sites/videos, so I'm a little fuzzy on the exact situation since it didn't really directly apply to me, but I believe it was either the 2nd, the 3rd or both of those from the far right that are the Immo control.

Just incase there IS a difference, I stumbled on a listing of the various 3rd Gen ECU's at one point (meaning it's out there to look for). There are about 12 different units (so 6 Fed/6 CA), there MAY actually be differences.

If it comes down to it for the OP, I have a 99 Fed ECU with a virgin Immo that was my test unit. I was planning on selling it anyway (still in my truck, but I have my original ready to go back in, just didn't want to do it right before I absolutely Needed the vehicle), rather it go to a forum member than some random buyer on ebay, even for less $$$.

I have a Limited '99 SR5 V6 auto CA emissions ECU that didn't work in my '99 non-immobilizer truck, which is why I'm sensitive to the issue. The engine would crank, but not start. I'd like to get a 4x4 ECU if the price is right (I'm still running the 2WD ECU on my 4WD converted truck).

I don't think you are. The immo function is built in to the Body-ECU. (THOSE kave different p/n's , not the ECM.) I can't explain Charlie's issue, though. Charlie's issue could be he has the wrong ECM because of mid year revisions. Some of those '99 p/n's were good for only two months on the autos. There were two different Cali. Auto ECMs for '99, although the second onelooks like it is for MY 2000.

I looked at the EWD. Yes, you are absolutely right about that. (My '99 is paper, too, or I'd post it.) But then why the different p/ns on the Body ECU:

I don't have Immob on my SR5, so maybe I should have kept my mouth shut. But, if it needs a different p/n, then you'd think it controlled the function. Sorry about that. I'm going to look further when I have time.

Maybe both immobilizer and non-immobilizer ECUs need programming after the truck is assembled? (one to say 'no-immobilizer' and one to program the keys)

Which gives me an idea to swap the immobilizer EEPROM chip between my ECUs... kinda risky though...

Nah, it's a stupidly easy surface mount chip to remove. Even with the wrong tools, I've done it several times without issue. Take it to a cell phone/table/laptop replace place that has the Right tools and there's zero risk. Combine that with a $20 EZP2010 chip reader and you can copy the programming before moving it over, just incase the new placement changes something (not sure how that'd be possible), or it fries (you can simply copy the data onto a replacement 93c56 16 bit chip).

Some people have been able to program those chips on the board, but I couldn't figure out a way. Maybe that same phone/tablet/laptop replace place will have a way.

I have all the tools right outside my office on the bench... A hot air pencil does make it easy. :bounce:

I'd be more likely to do it if I get some SO8 surface mount ZIF sockets for easy swapping of chips...
