California Cats

Ok, so i have a california spec 4runner, which means that it has 2 cats. So my question to you is since it originally came with 2 cats, would it be okay to replace the 2 cats with just 1? I dont see why not...

ouch tough question- I know if you are in Cal still then yes. If you are out of state I know some states will require you to keep all emissions as equipped from factory. The best bet would be to contact your local emissions or vehicle inspection facility. Let them know that you would meet the same standards as the federal emissions equiped vehicle for same year. They might ask that you change the decal to show the federal information instead of the Cal spec.

I think he wants to know if it can be done with it not affecting how the truck will run and not throw a CEL or something. I have a Cali truck also but haven't explored the 1 cat option since it would be cheaper.

It was either 99 or 2000 when all the 4runners and possibly other cars came with the dual cat set up. Because of awesome CARB is the trend setter so most if not all cars in the mid-late 90's followed just California spec cars and nixed having to produce two models.

Im in colorado so it wouldn't be a problem to do it, i just dont want to piss off my o2 sensor, or spend twice as much money

Thats just the issue I would think your emissions system would be ****ed up if you omit a cat. I bet YT would produce a better answer over there, as they seem to be more tech minded. But im pretty sure your 2nd o2 sensor will throw a code.

You would certainly throw a P0420. The famous URD O2 simulator would resolve the P0420.

Why do you want to replace them at all--since you don't care about emissions reduction? Are they so rusted as to be noisy?

2000 was the last Cali. Spec year. All v6 had 2 cats 2001 and beyond. I know Pikeman's answer does not apply, but for the record it would be a violation of federal law to test a vehicle to any spec other than original. They go by a VIN data base, and if it was born Cali. it stays Cali. Plus many states go by the on-board OBDII readout, which would still be Cali.

Wow that was harsh.... :sobbing: I gave the best answer I could at the time. I knew that in Cali it had to stay the same but I am glad you cleared it up that it is a federal issue to test other then as Originally equipped. Also why I advised on checking with his local testing facility.

I heard here i little bit back that if you buy a Dual Cat 4runner regardless of the state and there laws it must stay a Dual Cat 4runner, which sucks but its the rules.

Sorry, my friend, I meant your response did not apply because the OP was apparently not concerned with testing. Following same thread on YT, I see he DOES get tested; so your answer DOES apply. I wished only to clarify, not to disrespect another poster. My apologies if you thought otherwise.
