California cops crushing a Lexus IS-F for illegal street racing

It is really stupid to destroy something that took resources (materials, time, money) to build just to prove a point to some jackass doing 100mph pulls on the interstate. Just take the car, strip all the parts off, and sell them keeping the money for the department. Or, as Pikeman said, keep them for the department. Crushing them is stupid and wasteful, especially when the car is worth about $30k minimum.

I agree, its called a city auction. CA is dumb, regardless of racing or RD or whatever.

why wouldnt they sell the car and put the money to good use? no wonder the state is broke

why? you dont like to have a little fun, i didnt get a chance to read anything about this specific case but if he was fooling around with a buddy on the highway with no one around i dont really see that as grounds to destroy him and his vehicle.

Exactly! I never understand why people always flip out about street racing. In some cases, I can understand, and maybe the link didn't open correctly for me, but I didn't see much information at all.

Messing around in little spurts here and there is something we are all guilty of; oh wait, I forgot that this is a 4runner forum. I like to think that any car forum has enthusiasts participating; not people who look at a car as only something to get from Point A to Point B.

There are people who drive completely reckless 100% of the time; yes, they should get punished. But those who have a car like the Lexus and play with it here in there aren't horrible people who deserve their vehicle being destroyed.

I'm sure in most cases its harmless but in the case that Trevloc posted they were just having some fun and killed a guy. They were going so fast they never even saw him. If you own a sick car why not take it to the track so you don't have to worry about cops or other drivers and if worse case happens you have medical near by. Oh and let me also say yes its very stupid to destroy the car. Either sell it or take the guys license away. Don't trash it and waste resources.

There are people who drive completely reckless 100% of the time; yes, they should get punished. But those who have a car like the Lexus and play with it here in there aren't horrible people who deserve their vehicle being destroyed.

The huge reason people flip about street racing is the is inoccent lives have and continue to be lost because of illegal street racing and you can't make even one person's death to be an "oh well,those guys had nice cars and were having fun so what's a casualty or two".
Maybe if you lost a loved one to street racing you might think different but with young people the part of the brain that weighs consequences doesn't fully develop til they are well along into their twenties and it's defiently an issue with males. It's a fact and why young people do risky stuff.

I am not innocent by any means as little as 8 years ago I was a bit of a street racer but we were at least a liitle sane about it and did it in rural areas away from people and houses and limited the danger I was putting on the public. It's still stupid but not the kind of stupid when you see people racing in traffic or highly populated areas.

On the cars in Cali being crushed,you take a risk then racing and if you don't like the law then move. I'm betting that law does make potential street racers think a little.

People that live there know the law, so why should they let the guy slide for "messing around on the highway?" who's to say he wont do it again and again until he does hurt someone?

Let's say you get caught with child pornography......but it's only one picture. Should they "let it slide?"
