California Highway Patrol - now using Laser

Folks

just an FYI

Comming home on Friday night, I was on the 4 (the x town in Stockton) and I got squirted by a CHP Motorcycle officer with a Laser Radar

My V1 alerted me, but all the same, Laser is so fast on the reading and so accurate (they can shoot an individual vehicle) there is no chance at breaking or other evasive action.

My V1 has alerted to Laser before, but this is the first time I have ever locked eyeballs with the CHP officer who did it

and Ive had my V1 for probably 10 years

Thanks for the heads up, that's scary to know.

I've always relied on CHPs leaking Ka, so I knew I had some time to slow down.

I got hit by a laser coming home from Disneyland at about 11pm on the 22 West a few nights ago, so it seems to be getting more common. I use an Escort Passport 8500 X50 so mine is pretty accurate also.

Laser? No.

Once you're hit, you're toast.

I did get a warning once after getting hit with laser. I pulled over before the cop turned on his lights. Sent me home with a warning :D

I upgraded my Cobra detector a few months ago, to one with the new Ku alert, which is being used in Europe apparently. Recently, I have had a couple of Ku alerts on the highway down here in San Diego, CA, so heads up. I have been lucky so far (knock on wood) because I'll get the warning while they are shooting someone else. No matter how good a detector you have, you are already nailed by the time you get a warning if they are eyeballing you specifically.

And I thought the West Coasties were always ahead of the curve!

I got 'nailed' by the NY state troopers over 7 years ago with a laser while on my way to work. Never saw it coming, and my vintage passport was only good for microwave based radar. Now I behave myself.
 
Got boned 2 years ago by a MD Statie using laser at a speed trap leaving Ocean City's Cruisin' Weekend on Rt. 50. Once you're hit, you're done.
 
IIRC, I think the news mentioned that CHP is using laser on 101 up north over by Napa upto Santa Rosa about a year to year and half ago. I guess it's more wide spread now.

Two weekends ago, there was a huge speed trap by Auburn on I80. Five cruisers sitting on the on ramp, plus two others less than a mile from the pack with victims pulled over on the shoulder.

For those of us in NorCal, be careful.
 
its called lidar!
its really rad I've used it before and yes it sucks if you aren't the one shooting it becasue it is amazingly accurate and you can lock in to a vehicle with great precision!
 
hmmm... I just got the speed limit. Problem solved. There's no looking over your shoulder all the time wondering if a cop is lurking in the shadows. I have zero tickets, and my insurance is cheap. Is it really worth it to get somewhere another minute or so faster?

Pretty soon, we'll probably see systems here in CA like what arizona has. They enforce the speed limit by having automated devices on the freeway that will check your speed, and send the ticket to you in the mail along with a wonderful photo of you --- just like the red light cameras. That system makes a huge impact on speeders, and I imagine it also saves lives.

I agree with you on the fact that too many people push the limits too far. However, for many people with long commutes, or for people who drive a lot for vacations, speeding can save them tons of time. Not minutes, but hours in some cases.
 
The worst part about the tickests that get sent to you (as far as I understand) is that you still get points for em. I wouldn
 
No speeding for me in the 4R but I do run a V1 on my VMax when I go out for a long ride. I think in the pix he was using the Laz but my detector picked up the guy in front of me. Was not going more than 5 over at the time so it was a non-factor. I would like to add that the V1 plus good speeding tactics work to profection for me.

For me, I like the idea of just driving slow. So much easier to get somewhere without having to constantly scan the horizon line and rear-view and intersections for cops.

I will have to double check on that, but I know what I was a police officer those were highly illegal and could cost you jail time lol. If you are in a croud of vehicles it is hard for the police officer to tell which vehicle it is, but if you are the only one on the road at 4:30 in the morning it his lidar gun says ERROR, you are screwed. Lidar is very effective and I have not seen anyone be able to get out of one of those tickets, radar is too easy to get out of.

If you have to get somewhere in a hurry, rather than risk a speeding ticket, get into the carpool lane. When my buddy and I got one two years ago, no points, just the fine.

That's a good point if you live in an urban environment. Where I live we don't have (yet) carpool dedicated lanes. I'm guessing that's a good thing because it means our traffic isn't that bad (yet).
