Caliper Will Not Fit Over New Rotor

Hi Guys,

I have a '91 4Runner and just replaced the front drivers side rotor. I got new pads and such to do the brakes, but now the caliper will not fit over the rotor. It appears the rotor surfaces that touch the pads is 20mm, but it seems just a little too big to allow the caliper to slide on.
Note that the caliper will not fit on even without any pads in it. The two 'slots' on the top and bottom are just a hair too small to fit over the rotor.
Has anyone had this issue, do the rotors need to be machined down? Or is there something easy I'm just totally overlooking?

v6, or 4cyl?

i think the v6 had bigger rotors, and thus bigger calipers.


edit: nope, just looked them up, they take the same rotor. odd...

It's a 6cyl 3.0. The rotor was from AutoZone and after calling them this morning, they say that what I got is the correct part and specs.

I was wondering if maybe there was another 'bigger' caliper available. The guy that had the 4runner before me was somewhat of a parts swapper between his 5 or so different 4runners and Tacoma's. Unfortunately I have no way to contact him now.
 
do you still have the old rotor? can you get a pic of it?
or even the one from the other side.

maybe he put pre 86 calipers on, and had the rotors turned down until they fit? i dont even know if theres enough meat to do that..
its not likely...and im not sure why anyone would do such a thing..

First off, Autozone has no idea about early Yotas. They used to get parts wrong all the time, and then wanted to argue with me and tell me my truck was wrong. Try NAPA.

There is a difference between the "4cyl" calipers and "v6" calipers, but I'm pretty sure they take the same rotor? Take what you've got back to autozone, then hit a NAPA or O'Reillys with the inside dimension of your caliper. Have them pull part numbers for your '91, and for a 4cyl truck, use '86. See if the rotors have different part numbers. Measure what they bring you so that you know it'll fit your caliper.

Heading to NAPA with the caliper in about 20 minutes. I'll let you know.

BTW, it does appear that the AutoZone rotor is 20mm while the NAPA spec looks like 18mm ... not much but I think that may do the trick, we'll see.

Autozone is a joke. I haven't had bad luck at Advanced Auto, but I only deal with a few "trustworthy" people there.

Autozone tried telling me my 3VZE oil cooler (which I had sitting there on the counter with the Toyota stamp clearly visable) was aftermarket and not a factory option. I told the guy he needs to go play in traffic and walked out. Place is a joke.
 
I just pulled rotors from a donor hub I'm planning on using for a friends T4R. The Rotor I pulled off was pretty thin compared to the stock rotor I recently replaced. When I get home later, I'll post a picture of the two rotors, with measurements.

Yea, AutoZone gave me the wrong rotor, said the one I had was for a '95 ... I remember specifically telling the guy there it was a '91 (I repeat the year so many times when looking for parts, it's like ingrained now lol). Anywho, Napa did have the correct one, and everything fit properly.

BUT

Now I realize one of the 4 bolts that holds the 2 caliper pieces together is missing. Went to bleed the brakes and fluid just shot out of the caliper. How in the world it wasn't leaking before is beyond me.

Does anyone know the thread pitch of the bolts used in the '91 (yes, not '95 lol) calipers. Again it's one of the 4 that holds it together, 9/16 head on it, about 3 1/8"overall length.

are you sure you didnt remove it by mistake when you pulled the caliper?

if its leaking now, it would have been leaking before.

I'm pretty sure it's a 17MM bolt (Head) x 80MM (L). A bolt that big? How can you lose it?

FWIW, Here is the picture of two rotors from two different 4x4. The lower one is one I pulled from a donor hub, I blieve it was from a 94, on the inside it has a Min Thickness of 18.00MM. The upper one is one I pulled from my own 93, when I changed the rotors, Min Thickness 20.00.
