Call quality when using handsfree/bluetooth

I have had a chronic problem of people describing the call quality using handsfree as laced with 'white noise.' Doesn't matter if I'm stationary, driving, fan on/off, windows up/down, etc - it always sounds like garbage. Anecdotally, it seems to have all happened when I went from iPhone 3GS to 4 but this might be totally psychological. I just changed the head unit to a Pioneer Avic-120BT and I'm still getting complaints no matter how far I am away from the microphone. I'm wondering if there is some other interference I'm not accounting for. Has anybody else had problems with CALL QUALITY using handsfree? This is not a iPhone/pairing thread!!!!

My wife and I both have iphones. We purchased a 09 Highlander when they first came out for her. When she would call me on the Bluetooth it was like she was talking through a tunnel. Crap. When I got my 5th gen. 4Runner I had the same complaints from others when I used the Bluetooth. Far away...talking through a tunnel... Crap. It is very easy to pair and use the device. I like having the phone ring through the speakers but since have been answering the device itself to have a conversation. The only positive I could say was having the music still play in the background when on the phone. I'm not a big fan of being interrupted from my music rocking out while enjoying my new Runner to deal with a phone call. I wish there was a way to fine tune to get the Bluetooth to work properly.
 
People have been less than impressed with the call quality over bluetooth on the 4R. I am surprised by now that they have not nailed it down, actually kind of sad. It seem with fan speed anything more than half people have a real hard time hearing. I need to have someone call me from it so I can hear 1st hand though. (obviously all of this with the windows up)

Well, I'm glad to know this isn't isolated. For what it's worth I drove to an AT&T store and paired one of their demo 3GSs to the car and it sounded like garbage too so who knows. I'm going to attempt to move the microphone closer to the driver. Fan speed didn't seem to matter a whole lot with either the head unit or the aftermarket one. My old Audi didn't have this issue and neither did my 4th gen 4Runner with the pioneer Avic-2. Go figure. Thank you guys for your feedback. If anybody has any tips on trying to isolate the microphone some more it'd be appreciated. Cheers!
 
Iphone 3gs and not one complaint as of yet. Beats the hell out of my suck-ass range rover bluetooth that was a mix of underwater and tunnel speaking along with the never pairing phone.
 
I use my black Berry 8100 with hand free in my 5th gen T4R and nothing to complain about it , i ask the person on the other end how it sounds, they said it is very clear.

Blackberry Storm2 and as far as sound quality goes, its great. However, when I turn the ignition on, it pairs fine but the car thinks I am already on the phone? My LG phone had no issues

I am getting an iphone4 today and will test it and report back
 
I have a iPhone4 and use hands free all the time. No problems with either music or phone. I wish I could cycle through songs using steering wheel controls with the iPhone/Bluetooth, but I've heard that's a iPhone issue that needs an update. People say they can hear me just fine.
 
No complaints with my iphone... people are actually suprised when I let them know they are on speaker phone since they couldn't tell at all.

About to upgrade from the 2g to the 4 this week so I guess I'll find out soon if this becomes an issue.
 
This is the 3rd Toyota we have had with Bluetooth. Our first Camry was good, our second Camry (same year) was terrible and the 4 Runner is good.

I don't think it is the implementation, I think it is just quirky with some cars. It is probably tough for Toyota to deal with since there are a lot of different phones out there. The dealers may give a quick look, and if they can't find a quick fix then they assume it must be an issue with the phone.
 
I tested my iPhone 3GS quality by calling home and leaving a message. It sounded better than most of the messages left by others.
 
my iphone 4 has chronic problems with my avic system. It seems to fade out and break up throughout the call. Not sure if it's my phone or my stereo.
 
I have a iPhone 3GS and 3G synched with MY Pioneer Avic Z120BT system and the hands free works good and clear.Worked good with the Factory nav too.People didn't even know they were on speaker phone.

A noted reception problem with the 4G's has been reported and a couple of friends said their reception fades in and out alot more then their old 3GS's and they are pissed about it.I'm sure Apple is working on it or blaming AT&T!
 
My wife complains about the feedback or cutting out of my bluetooth. I have the Pioneer 720 DVD/Nav in my 99 and pioneer doesn't have the best quality stock microphones. Its worth it to spend a little more on a better microphone and mounting it in a place where you dont get any feedback. Correct me if im wrong guys but that's what my buddy told me who owns a window tinting and stereo business

Where would one get a better microphone? I have the avic z120bt and i get complaints all the time on how terrible it sounds.
 
Be glad you even have a wind tunnel call

I can't get the bluetooth to sync up with my HTC Imagio phone

My phone see's the 4Runners bluetooth but when I enter the code the truck says it didn't setup etc
 
Using my 3gs on my limited (nav) bluetooth, I have had 0 complaints thus far. Occasionally I'm asked if I'm on a speakerphone, but I call my 83yr old grandmother on this and she has no trouble hearing me at all. Works great. I do wish the music wouldn't completely cut off but the ability to dial by voice and other such features make it worth it to me.
