Calling all BF Goodrich owners.

I've tried to rehash a couple of threads with my ? but no one will bite.

Had Toytec Boss and 275 70 17 BF KO2s installed. drives great under 50, 55+ horrible vibration. Toytec says probably tires (which is typical for that speed). Already had tires mounted and balanced and alignment done.

Shop I'm using swears they have had a lot of issues with BF Goodrich tires on Toyotas (FJs, Tacoma's, 4runners). They even told me this before I had my KO2s on order. They think it has something to do with angle of steering rack, etc...

Going back for rebalance and alignment adjustment tomorrow. Any BF owners experienced similar issues? If they can't resolve do you think I should try another shop?

I'm going to say there is probably a tire still out of balance or out of round. Sometimes you just get a bad tire that can't be balanced. I'd probably take it elsewhere and see what they do without mentioning what the previous shop said.
 
I don't have a vibration, just a steering wheel "shimmey" above 55. But I have a couple of variables working against me.

I have 285/75/16 BFG M/T KM(1), but they're retreads (from Treadwright).
I also have Dynabeads instead of conventional Wheel Balancing.

Again, I've never felt a noticebale vibration in the truck except for the steering wheel shake. That could be due to other issues. Pumping Grease into my OTREs helped diminish that.

So I dunno.. I'm still pretty new to T4R and 4x4 ownership.

I good way to help determine that is to do a tire rotation and see if the vibration changes

I get a steering wheel shake as well, but mine happens between 60 and 70MPH, and then smoothes out. I'm at a loss with it right now. I'm running Duratracs, and I've had them balanced twice, at good shops and it didn't help.

I've replaced all kinds of stuff up front. Struts, inner and outer tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints, brand new Tundra rotors and calipers, sway bar end links and bushing, and the steering rack bushings, and I still have a slight shake.

It's driving me crazy because I use the truck for work and a do a ton of highway driving in it. I'm at a loss at this point. I'm starting to suspect I have a bad CV joint up front because it seems to me that the issue has to be with a rotating part and I've replaced most of them at this point.
 
I've got 275 KO2s on some Method wheels. The shop I had them installed and balanced at said they were extremely easy to balance and the ride is super smooth at all speeds though my 4r is rather new and things are still tight.

Old KOs had a reputation for being hard to balance, but it seems like most people are doing well with balance on the KO2s.

If you havent already, get your tires balanced with someone that has a road force balancer.

Also, what PSI are you running in the tires? Should be around 44 for the highway but try 40 and 48 and see if it changes the feel.

Thanks for the input. The local shop wants 40 a tire for the force balance. May have to go that direction though
 
Do you not have a Firestone there? Lifetime balance and rotation is like $60 or so. I've got BFG KM(1) not retreads, actual BFG's in a 255/75/17 and they ride perfect. No issues balancing them at all. The one tire only took .75 ounces to balance, and they're mud tires! The guy at the shop who did the alignment even said they ride amazing, especially for mud tires.

My previous tires were BFG Rugged Terrains, and I didn't have any issues with them either. No issues balancing, or vibrating while driving.

I'm not saying this isnt true but i havent heard of this regarding bfg's but i have also not researched it either. My bfg at ko's from discount tire balanced correctly the first time around. However, i have personally experienced having to take previous cars/suvs I've owned, with different brands of tires, multiple times to correct an improper balance and ive been given many excuses from having a bad wheel to a bad tire. & while that was always a possibility, i knew in my case it was very unlikely bc it would handle just fine prior to getting out of balance...& when it did get out of balance, i was pretty certain it wasnt force/trauma related to cause the imbalance. After several balance attempts it would finally get corrected which reinforced the fact that it was technician error. The few times ive had vibrations/steering wheel shimmy's at higher speeds with my 4runner were alignment related issues & i knew it was alignment related bc it happend after some type of suspension upgrade/maintenance i did.
 
Did you get a new suspension lift when you got the new tires? I might be more inclined to believe that you tires were causing the issue if you had been running the Toytec lift for a while without issue.

I am still running the 2002 factory suspension and recently bought some BFG KO2s in 265/75/16. They are running smooth with no issues. In fact, they are running quieter than the dumb Toyota Camry rental that I got while my 4runner is in the body shop getting repaired from some idiot running into me.

I was surprised at just how smooth and quiet they are considering the tread pattern. I will add that I got my tires at Discount Tire, and I got my alignment at Firestone with the lifetime alignment. Everything is in the green.

as mentioned above, try rotating the tires. see if it changes, or goes away.
 
Took my 4runner on first 75+ mile/highway trip since installing the Toytec Boss. Still having vibration issues. Don't think it is tires or alignment. Where do I go from here? Pretty frustrating. Thanks for any help.
 
I have P265/70R17 BFG AT KO's on my 2004 with no lift. Have had to take back to get balanced after last 3 rotations at Discount Tire due to steering wheel shake. I was shopping around for someplace to do Road Force Balancing last week and everybody's machines were broken except dealers. Local Toyota dealer said $125 plus labor. Labor being a wild card depending on time required to balance. BS to that. Took it back to Discount to have rebalanced and there's no steering wheel shake now.

I can't help out with the vibration issue unfortunately, but hopefully someone can! As an aside, would you mind sharing the shops in question and any opinions, both the original shop and the second if you ended up using them? I'm Conway based but will be putting new tires on my 97 in next month or two. I've been using Austin Bros. in Conway and had great experiences both on price and quality of work, but still plan on price shopping around Conway and LR before I pull the trigger.

I just had KO2s in 265/75/16 on my runner and have had zero issues, Discount Tire mounted and balanced and they are running incredibly smooth for me. Sorry to hear you've experienced otherwise :/
 
Install the newer style rack guide. This upgrade should be part of the 3rd gen T4R and Taco lifting 101 curriculum. Heck, I did did it on my stock 1996.

When did they start installing the newer style? The 2002 still has the old style?

I did not have this problem before the boss lift. Does it still make sense that it could be the rack guide?
