Calling all TRD Supercharged Owners

How many of you have just the supercharger bolted on with nothing extra as far as fuel management, 7th injector kit or anything like that?

I have been doing alot of reading about issues.
UltimateYota.com

I live up in Colorado so im always above 5000 feet and I know 2 people with the SC just bolted on and good to go with no issues, curios about other peoples experience...

I plan to run a transmission cooler and maybe Denso Shupercharger sparkplugs and maybe URD injectors. Ideally I would like to just bolt it on and go, but I just would like peoples input who have them on their rigs.

Thank's Tyler.

I do. I live in Windsor, CO (4900ft). Literally, I did nothing except bolt it on. I don't hear any pinging at all. Mine is a 2nd gen SC on a 2000 4runner.

I do plan on doing the 7th injector kit mainly because I run 37s with 5.29s with the A/T and want more power. I also installed a 20,000LB tranny cooler and bypassed the stock radiator cooler. I tow a pop-up with mine all over, and the tranny has never gotten warmer than 215 degrees with the cooler. And that was pushing it with the torque converter unlocked and in OD on a 4% grade towing. It routinely runs at 150-160* on flats when towing or not towing. When I click the OD button off, it will never run warmer than 195* on hills. I have towed several times up 285 to Buena Vista with zero issues.

2000 with 1st gen supercharger installed at delivery by dealer. No mods except if you call the "free FMU" a mod.
Runs real good, in fact I even ran regular gasoline for years. I just learned to drive it so as not to cause the HGLR pinging. Eventually the computer adjusts.
However, I did notice the decreased performance with the engine detuned as it was.
I have since switched back to premium fuel and bumped my plugs up to a one step colder version of the stock Denso copper plug (K20TR11) at the last plug change. Noticeably better power and still no ping.
I think you only really need the extra fuel if you are really leaving your foot in it for long periods of time. I really don't run WOT for more than a few seconds at a time.
She still runs like a champ after 136K miles. I really need to look into changing the nose drive oil though. Been avoiding that for some reason.

Which is better to use on a 3rd gen 4Runner...the 1st gen SC or the 2nd gen SC?

I'd like to supercharge mine sometime in the future.

Everything Ive read you wanna go with the 2nd Gen. I may be wrong, but I have been doing a ton of research and that's why im trying to get people who have one installed input's on it also.

I don't think the 1st gen and 2nd gen are any different mechanically, they are both Eaton M-62 modified Roots type blowers.
The 2nd Gen is preferred since it uses a later version of the Eaton supercharger that has the bypass valve built in, resulting in a more compact design. It also looks way better.
The biggest reason to get the 2nd Gen is the fact that the fill/drain hole for the nose drive oil is facing up so you can change the oil while it is still installed.
The 1st gen is installed upside down, forcing you to remove the blower in order to access the drain port; hence the reason I have not gotten around to changing the oil.

May be some stupid question but always wondered about them so I'm gonna ask:
1) How long do superchargers on these 4-runners typically last?
2) What kind of services do you have to perform on them?
3) Do they have to be rebuilt after a certain period or if you service them properly can they be on the truck till it dies (200,000+ miles) and still function properly?

1. Can last a long time.

2. You need to change the oil inside of them.

3. They are suggested to be inspected and to be rebuilt at about 100,000 miles on them.

Nothing bolted on my TRD S/C.
the S/C has been on for approx 80k and spends weekends in tahoe area. which is any where from 5k to 6.3k feet above sea level.
week days its a Major metro city commute carin the SF bay area.
only thing i notice is the gas milage difference from stop and go traffic to highway driving and off raoding

Just for info i bit the bullet and ordered my 7th injector from URD today. I have to say Gadget is the MAN, and he will take the time to explain things to you and backs his injector system 100%.

So I was looking at the URD 7th injector kit and I noticed it said "Legal in California only for racing vehicles, which may never be used upon a highway." Why wouldn't it be allowed in California. I had a supercharger a few years ago on a Tacoma. Is California that strict? Man they make it hard to upgrade our 4runners.

the only reason the 7th injector kit from URD is for "racing vech's only" in california, is because it has the ability to be tuned by the end user, that feature alone keeps it from being CARB certified.

The URD upgrade kit for the TRD 7th injector just uses all the TRD parts and changes the control unit, the urd unit gives you a better fuel map options and can be tuned if you run a smaller pulley.

A few members from Yotatech in california have the URD system and it passes the smog sniffer test.

I just bought a 2000 SR5 4R auto with SC and no mods. 113k miles. It runs fine except for the HG/LR ping when going up hills.

Do you think 2 step colder plugs will help to get rid of the HG/LG ping or knocking??

Thanks

Can anyone be so kind as to tell me how involved it is to take a 1st gen SC off of a 2000 SR5 4R and convert it back to stock? Maybe someone that's done it?

After the SC is removed, what parts are needed to reassemble the top air intake system back to stock besides the stock Toyota air surge manifold?

Is it a difficult procedure and would all the parts and gaskets cost a lot?

Thanks....I need all the help I can get. Physically disabled at the present time,
so I'll have to hire a mechanic to do it for me.

I'm pretty sure someone will swap their intake for your SC and do all the conversion work for free, or even pay you a few bucks for the privilege.
Let us know where you are located.

Where are you located? I have done the swap, and could do the work. My shop manager has a 2000 and I am sure he would be interested in trading.

I'm located on the south coast of Oregon. Little town below Coos Bay.

The SC doesn't leak a drop of oil at the nose drive and does not make any rattling sounds at all. It does make that nice whine when it kicks in and you
can feel the power. It did have the HG/LR knock pretty bad when I bought it,
but that usually happened only when I was going up long steep hills. I drove it like that for a couple of months and the CEL never came on.

I got the HG/LR knock to go away by putting in 2 step colder plugs, new
wires, cleaned the MAF sensor, and ran a bottle of Techron though the gas tank.....but now the CEL keeps coming on. Sometimes the CEL will go off on
it's own for awhile, but then comes back on again. The code is P0 330 - knock sensor 2 circuit fault, which indicates either the harness wire is bad
or the #2 sensor is bad? I've read when the CEL comes on, it alerts the
EMC to put the engine in 'safe mode' which re****s the timing. That usually
makes the engine run crappy.

This doesn't seem to be happening since the 4R runs great whether the
CEL is on or off.

But one thing...every since changing the plugs and wires, the engine now
idles slow when cold (500 rpm) and goes up to 1400 rpm when it warms up.
Just about the opposite of what it used to do, and is supposed to do.

I like the SC and would keep it if I can get this problem solved. It looks like
It's not going to be cheap to have both knock sensors and wiring harness
replaced. I also don't know just how old the SC is or how many miles are on
it or if it was ever serviced. There is only a small white sticker on the side
of this gray 1st gen. SC that says - Magnuson AS14072

Anyone know what that number means or if it tells the year in code?

I have a feeling that the SC was put on when the old couple bought it with
82k on the clock. I also think they drove it easy like old people tend to drive
judging by how well kept the rest of the 4R was.

I went ahead and bought a used air surge tank manifold off ebay (thanks to Elton H) for $62. That is the main part that was taken off when the SC was put on. All the parts warehouses wanted $500.+ for it. It's just that simple
aluminum manifold that bolts to the throttle body right where the SC is bolted to. I wanted to have this part on hand just in case I need to restore
the 4R back to stock. I know there are plenty of other parts and gaskets that will also be needed....but that surge tank manifold is the main one.

Sorry for the novel. Just trying to cover everything.

Please let me know what your thoughts are about the CEL going on and off,
and if anyone has any idea of how old my SC is.

Thanks

re trd supercharger

i have a 2000 4runner with 2nd gen supercharger trd headers and split second timing map module and dont have any problems with detonation or anything on 91 octane and my 4runner has 233k miles

Excursionrunner - Glad to hear it. Do you have any fuel mods? Tranny cooler?
Ever serviced your SC or changed it's oil? What heat range plugs do you use?

The green 4Runner wouldn't happen to be yours now would it? This used to be my buddy's 4Runner, before he sold it to the guy you bought it from in San Antonio. His username on here is trailmix.

Need some help here Please

Thanks for hi-jacking my thread. Nice pics..but wtf?

Is there anyone on this whole forum that has ACTUALLY installed a SC on
their own in a 97-2000 4R and can tell me exactly what parts I will need to return my 2000 SR5 4WD ATM 3.4 V6 4R back to stock?????????
----------------
I know I will need an UPPER air intake manifold, or surge tank and I will
need a LOWER air intake manifold.

I also will need the gasket set (4 gaskets) for the manifolds.

Is there ANY OTHER parts...or are these the 2 main ones?
----------------
If there is a REAL mechanic that knows his **** and can answer this
I would certainly appreciate it. Or send me a PM. Thanks.
