I bought a '98 4Runner Limited with 3.4L ~3 months ago with 180k miles. This is my first Toyota. I was driving it on the freeway 2 Weeks ago when the cam gear broke off. The gear looks like it was loose for some time. (The timing belt looks pretty new so I am guessing the cam bolt was not fully tightened when the belt was replaced.) The bolt sheared off and the cam gear timing pin is sheared off and the cam shoulder that the gear sits on is damaged beyound repair. This is on the driver side bank.
Which is easier to do myself, replace the cam or the head? I know of no other problems at this point. Anything else I should know before tearing into this? Special tools? (I have done a lot of engine work on Chrysler engines.)
If I replace the cam I would get it from the local bone yard. Anything in particular to look for/guard against?
Is it worth getting a head from the bone yard or just buy a rebuilt? Recommended rebuilders?
